Last weekend I was looking to book a flight SYD-LAX for 26 June. QF was showing QF107 was available for around $730ish one-way (as part of a return ticket). EF was showing 9's for all the the economy cabin.

The next morning I checked again, and there was one seat available in economy, and the price was approx $3500.

On Monday night, it was back to being completely open - all 9's on EF - and the price was back to $730ish. This morning I go to book it, and there is no availability at all for that day SYD-LAX. EF is showing 2 first class seats, and nothing else.

QF11 is also flying that day, but it also has no availability.

Any ideas as to why it is so erratic? Has another flight been cancelled, and maybe they have combined the flights?

Yep!

I have seen this sort of thing all year.

The flights are all heavily booked in WHY but not in the premium classes.

Qantas see any seat as saleable and will often bump up the WHY buckets include the cheaper one a little to increase revenue for the flight. The intention being to upgrade passengers as necessary.

As you get closer to the flight you may see these reappear or not.

Another possibility is that Qantas may have been moving PAX around available flights.

Note on this day, each of QF15, QF26, QF11 and QF93 are all showing sold out in WHY with a little J availability (especially QF25).

Could also have been a temporary change of aircraft that was then changed back again.

One seat popped up on QF11 a couple of hours ago, for about $790, which I grabbed. Was able to hold the booking, but not finalise it, as the site is down.

Is on the A380, which is nice, and a better time - afternoon departure instead of morning.

I was surprised they released one seat, as low as Q. I checked back after I held the seat, and there was no more availability for that day, so I am sure that they could have sold it for higher than a Q fare.

Before you bought that seat loadings may have shown as : B1 H1 K1 M1 L1 V1 S1 N1 Q1 O1 X1 E0

Once you snaffled a Q class seat those 1's would have all turned to 0's (or C) .
