What is the purpose of this bag tag?

I just ripped this tag off my bag. I've always wondered what it's supposed to mean. Can anyone shed some light?

Does it have something to do with INT<->DOM transfer?

The logo / font suggests that even though the design is old, the tag itself is not, so it must serve some distinct function.

It's just a standard one time paper bag tag. Similar to the new brownish ones that economy passengers have. You fold it in half and write your details on the inside.
That's strange, the check-in agents put it on before sending my bag down the belt. I never have a chance to write anything on it?

Qantas "seamless" transfer!

They (used to?) have signs at SYD pointing the way to the Int/Dom Transfer with that Blue/Yellow/Red/White logo on them.

At check-in (say in MEL) they whack the tags on the bags so the handlers is SYD know to put the send the bag off to Terminal 1.

It all started when they introduced the Bus just before the Olympics IIRC.

See the Seamless transfer section on the SYD airport site for the logo.

Ahh, mystery solved. Thanks guys.

I think the use of the word "seamless" is rather generous when describing the Qantas bus transfer in Sydney.

I always refer to it as 'not so seamless' transfer.
Still, it's better than having to catch a train or the TBus.

Each time I've gone Dom -> Int they've places a blue and white striped tag which from memory says "International Connection" on it... I don't remember getting one of these multicolour tags (unless they don't have them in CBR)

For what it's worth, the last time I got this was on an INT->DOM connection. (Not DOM->INT)

In that case I can see no reason why they would need to tag the bag as transfer, considering for a INT -> DOM connection you have to collect your bags at INT and physically take them over to the transfer desk yourself...

Exactly. Hence my confusion. :)

The last check-in agent even made sure to tell me that I'd have to collect my bag in SYD before connecting to my MEL flight. Yet, that tag still went onto my bag.

I always get this tag on an INT connection, whether originating in CNS or MEL.

I was surprised by the question, but I guess Sydneysiders would never see it ;)
