What to do in Singapore on yet another trip there?

Apologies if I've offended anyone - not intended. It is afterall Father's Day. Changi is a "special" visit. 'Nuff said.

Sometimes you don't want to go through the morbidity of visiting a war cemetery, even though you know you've should. I've visited the American one in Luxembourg, and the Australian cemetery at Adelaide River, and I can say there is a sense of confronting spirituality that I think many are fearful of, but once you've done it, you are glad.

I was lucky to have a retired half-colonel from the US gave me a tour of the American cemetery in Luxembourg, and what were just gravestones came to life with a few tales of heroics, but also lighter issues re: upkeep and different faith traditions. Unlike Christians who leave flowers, Jews leave rocks on graves (a bit more permanent - I like it). Not a problem with a lawn cemetery like Adelaide River, but a big one in Luxembourg when the headstones are white marble, and the rocks on Luxembourg are ochre red. They had a problem of the eroding rocks staining the gravestones, interrupting a stark field of white reminding us that the Battle of the Bulge was not easily one, so now they provide white rocks for Jewish visitors.

I enjoyed Changi. Finding a taxi back to my hotel proved a bit of a challenge though.

Changi was is a bit quiet for me, I guess can be good to get away from the big city. Although the place does get a bit busier at night time. I passed through it to get the ferry to Pulau Ubin. There is a good hawker centre down by the ferry terminal. Had some good chilli crab on the way back.

There is the Changi museum which covers the old POW prison. Other than that there is not a whole lot to do in Changi.

I could easily play a game of golf or 2. I hear Sentosa is quite nice but on the expensive side.

For the true airplane junkie .... either hire a bicycle (there is a network of places you can pick them up from and return them to a different spot) and ride (1-2 hrs) OR walk (about 3-4 hrs) from East Coast Park (start or finish at East Coast Lagoon Food Centre) to Changi Beach/Village (or vice versa). It will take you along the whole length of the eastern runway at Changi, with great views of take offs and landing, and if planes are landing from the north you get right underneath them along Changi Beach, as they come into land.

If you are into swamps ... Sungei Buloh wetlands is something to pass some time with. There a three trails, on the third (longest) one I spent a good 20-30 minutes without seeing another person, which is quite something given the population density of Singapore.

Another lookout ... in the 50th floor skybridge of the imposing HDB buildings near Outram Park MRT/Chinatown

Brillian suggestions Dajop, thanks. I'd had a look at some parks and not heard of Sungei Buloh so it has gone on the list too. Will checkout the skybridge too as I'm going to see the URA (redevelopment authority museum) that I've not been to before. It's in the same general area.

I don't play golf unfortunately JohnK, but I would imagine that the greens are quite expensive, being very limited space-wise. Though competition from JB right next door would help keep the prices down I guess.

Expensive golf

Have you "done" Tiong Bahru?

A great coffee shop 40 Hands Coffee for a leisurely brunchy breakfast with great coffee and a wander around, what I think is a very interesting area.

That's half a day done!

If you like museums then the Asian Civilisations Museum. the National Museum of Singapore and the Singapore Art Museum are well worth a look.

Don't know if it's your think but I love to go to the Fullerton Hotel for afternoon tea. Great way to while away a couple of hours and much better value than anything similar you'd get back here.

I'm a fan of the Fullerton generally, it's my new base for stays if I have no suite upgrade certs for the fairmont (a certainty next year), but I haven't had the Courtyard's high tea. The scones in the lounge are pretty decent so I imagine the downstairs tea is amazing.
