I rarely rent cars, 2-3 times per year. I find I am usually having to pickup [redacted] rental car company for minor billing incidents which invariably are in their favour but also in their human control.

I have written about the fuel incident where my tank was full but interpreted as half full. I was able to provide the receipt as proof but should I have to?

Most recently and just resolved today after a month, a car was returned to Sydney AP at our around 8:37am. Time that it was processed as 'returned' as a neat 14:00 which clocked my rental up another full day. Consider there is an attendant who checks the car and checks it in at the returns bay, a human had to have 'updated' the system to the nice round 14:00 figure.

So, what gives with car rental companies? What's your worst experiences? How common are these little 'mistakes'?

Can we come up with a percentage...I'm running at 66% error rate.

Same thing happened to me in early 2000's. Even after I provided a fuel receipt and a BP and a letter from Ansett advising that I was on a flight almost at OOL when they reckoned I was just dropping off the vehicle, they refused to aknowledge that I just may have been in the right. This was after they provided (and billed) for a car seat with no straps (I had to use belts we were wearing to secure it). All in all they made me see RED SPOTs before my eyes and I vowed and declared I'd never use the particular company again. That was at SYD DOM.
