When did QF stop serving free beer & wine in domestic economy?

First up, I'll admit I tend to tune out when it comes to on board announcements. I also don't drink on domestic flights.

Tonight I was actually paying attention and caught the announcement that beer and wine is $6.50 each in economy. Since when has this policy been in place?

Thanks, pw.

[h=2]Onboard Dining[/h]Experience a quality meal or snack and premium wines on every Qantas flight. Food and beverages are included on all Qantas flights, with beer and wine offered on all city flights after 4pm. Complimentary newspapers are offered on morning services departing before 9am.

Domestic Economy Class | Qantas

I think you will find it is free after a certain time on weekday flights (4pm I think).

Outside of this they charge.

I cannot recall them ever not charging (barring Cityflyer flights), but maybe it was all complimentary 'back in the day'.

Beer and Wine is complimentary of city flights after 4 pm on weekdays, and from lunch onwards every day on Perth trans-con flights.

So, on weekends it is charged (outside of some Perth flights).

It has long been so. I think way back they charged on all flights, and the city/Perth flights had complimentary alcohol added over time

(Really does look like the Cityflyer tag has gone...)

OK, that makes sense then.

If I fly for work I typically do travel Mon-Fri when there is free alcohol.

Thanks everyone.

They charge $5 for all beers on the KTA/PER routes, regardless of time. Sometimes they charge $6, it depends. I even had someone query it on my last flight...

1. Mon to Fri.
2. CityFlyer only.

eg. SYD-DRW not included, nor the SYD-MEL on Sun night
Definitely catches you out every now and then

I remember having to pay on the BNE-SYD route after 4pm a few years back; the guy sitting next to me actually queried this, and they said the flight wasn't classed as a Cityflyer. I admit to being surprised at having to pay, but couldn't be bothered getting in knots over it; charged it to the client instead, but thought it was odd that the connecting flight, ADL-SYD was eligible, but this wasn't.

Guess the 'over indulgence" of a few liquid refreshments is affecting the 'bottom line" of QF 'profit & loss" statements on certain sectors & at select times.
Perhaps another 'watered down enhancement"

What is the logic on the weekdays policy? I would of thought the weekends is really when most passengers are more likely to indulge in a drink.

Whatever the reason, I find it very strange QF chooses to make this distinction.

It was marketed as being a business (as in people flying for business) thing. Remember the "qantas knows I like a paper in the morning and a drink at night" advertisement?

Qantas will never make any flight to DRW Cityflyer - the ferals up here will drink the plane dry in minutes.

I think the question is... when did it go up from $6 to $6.50? It certainly wasn't like that a few weeks ago (I like to make sure I have the right change available).

Having said that, while I pay for my first one it isn't uncommon for me to be discretely slipped a second (or sometimes even a third) free of charge.

On some routes, an unwritten WP/SG benefit (and maybe for those pesky P1s and CLs ;) ) seems to be the ability for the CSM to discretely offer something from the alcohol cart. But not on every route - normally the smaller ones where there aren't many WPs etc.

Somewhat OT (well, wrong airline) I flew CBR-MEL on DJ in Y last Saturday departing at 1700. When the drink cart came out, I noted beer and water, and opted for water. I then heard several people behind me order red wine, which was fetched from somewhere in the cart, and it seemed to be complimentary. Rather surprising.

Ex-CBR alcohol is free on some DJ flights.
