When did QF stop serving free beer & wine in domestic economy?

Somewhat OT (well, wrong airline) I flew CBR-MEL on DJ in Y last Saturday departing at 1700. When the drink cart came out, I noted beer and water, and opted for water. I then heard several people behind me order red wine, which was fetched from somewhere in the cart, and it seemed to be complimentary. Rather surprising.

I think that is correct for the Capital Connect services.

Guests travelling on flights from Canberra to Sydney or Melbourne (and return) are offered complimentary snacks and beverages including water, juice, tea and coffee. Beer and wine is available on flights scheduled to depart after 4pm.

Booze has been free on DJ between 4pm and 7pm for some time (between capital cities). There should be no surprises about that. In fact there have even been some complaints that soft drink isn't free.

I was charged for wine ($5 as he didn't have any change) on HBA/MEL after 4pm a few weeks ago, so either Hobart doesn't count as a city or the FAs aren't up on the new rules yet.

Needs to be mainland for DJ:

All Economy guests receive complimentary tea, coffee and water on all Virgin Australia flights. In addition we also offer a selection of complimentary beer and wine on flights between Australian mainland capital cities, departing between 4pm and 7pm, Monday to Friday.

QF doesn't specify though, it just says "city flights".

QF does specify, in that they refer to Cityfler flights, which are not all mainland capital city flights, DRW BNE is PAYG for instance.

Complimentary refreshments are included on all flights so that you enjoy a full service experience. Beer and wine is served from 4pm on Cityflyer flights on weekdays (and after noon on Perth services every day).

Lol, too much to expect the QF website to be consistent with itself I guess ;)

agree..the QF website is shocking with its info about 'service' 'inflight' 'cabin' 'seatmaps' info...you'd think whoever 'updates' the info would do a general 'sweep' of the website to adjust outdated/incorrect/inconsistent info..maybe even one sweep at the beginning of every month would be sufficient to keep info up to date:idea:

It's been that way for quite a while (10 years?) - I was coming back from MEL yesterday and a few people questioned paying $6.5 for a wine/beer as they thought it was included.

I don't really do alcohol on a 1hr flight in Y, barely enough time to eat! (on that note the chili con carne in Y was nice)

Stuff alcohol on the plane, I want a Japanese style beer dispenser in the lounge. Place glass, push button, watch it tilt, and achieve the perfect pour every time. Good for the environment (less glass being used once then being melted down), and good for faster access to beer, especially if there are more than once dispenser.

That is handy to know.

That is such a highlight in Japan, secondly the open tap approach with the frosted glasses available in select lounges.
Wonderful concepts :D

On some routes, an unwritten WP/SG benefit (and maybe for those pesky P1s and CLs ;) ) seems to be the ability for the CSM to discretely offer something from the alcohol cart. But not on every route - normally the smaller ones where there aren't many WPs etc.

I find it depends simply on the crew- sometimes the staff is really great and they do it and then again on the same flight a week later, no trace of it. I find that the latter usually goes along with rather bland and grumpy staff while the special treatment up in row 4 is usually offered if the staff in general is extremely well trained and friendly (i.e. welcoming you by last name and similar little things). However- it might also all just be coincidental and a bit of luck. I never complain if I get a couple of nice reds from the front :p

A few times in front row of whY I havent paid for drinks - either by the choice of the crew (due to my status I assume) or because (again possibly due to status) they can't be bothered taking the $50 I hand them ;) and finding change...

I am not finding though much special welcome type stuff for P1.
