In Tokyo with no electricity power adapter. Hotel can't help me so now I have no way of charging or using any of my electronic gear. My life is over!!!!!!!
Does anyone know where I can get a "female" Aussie adapter - all I can find here are for Japanese electrics.

Get your hotel to show you the way to Akihabara. Massive number of electrical/electronic shops. Someone will have what you need. Take an "Aussie" plug/lead with you or at least a photo to help overcome any language problems.

My Gosh.. Are you sure you are in Tokyo..?? IME Every conceivable electronic item is available somewhere there

Just a tip - if the hotel has a shaver outlet in the bathroom with a universal socket, you can use that to charge small devices like phones, ipads or toothbrushes. Any small device or charger using less than 15W should be OK. Not for lap-top chargers or hair dryers and the like!

Do tell us the name of the hotel. I've found in Japan that even the smallest hotel will go above and beyond to assist guests, especially in minor matters such as this.

I was thinking along the same lines.
Have never had any issue with obtaining anything reasonable from hotel reception/concierge in Japan.
They are usually well equipped &/or most obliging to assist.

And you will only pay about $5 too ! They have absolutely everything in the stalls down the side streets.

Ah yes, from the comfort of my desk I too might have thought "This guy can't even find a plug in the country that is virtually the ancestral home of all things electronic." but we flew overnight, wife is a poor sleeper and managed to score a seat-kicking kid behind her (how do their feet even reach in J ?), arrived 6.15 to be hit by a heatwave with temps in the 30's after coming from wintery Melbourne. Strictly no check in at hotel (Century Southern Tower, Shinjuku) till 2pm so off we go to walk around Gyoen Gardens but heat gets to sleepless wife and she faints on a seat. Slowly back to hotel by 13.30 but had to watch 4 reception staff doing virtually nothing for 30 minutes as the lobby filled with other guests in the same predicament (they play strictly by the rules in JP).

Camera needs charging is the first recognition that the new multiplug adaptor the wife bought online doesn't have Aussie input (should have bought the AFF one when I intended to) - housekeeping lady brings American plug, another call and she returns with another the same and declares that is all they have. She smiles triumphantly as she forces a square peg into a round hole and jams our plug into their adaptor - of course it doesn't work! So off to the shops - Takashimaya Dept Store, Tokyu Hands, camera shop etc - 2 1/2 hrs and no result and it's tiresome walking in the heat.

Back to hotel and wife contemplates not being able to capture the happy snaps on camera, not being able to use her hair wand, laptop, charge mobile etc so now the day trip to Hakone the next day is off the itinerary while we contemplate a trip to Akiharbara to get the adaptor, but hey, maybe the good ppl at AFF can save us some time walking around in the heat if I post a question but, my gosh, I'm a tosser for not instinctively knowing where to go in a city I'm not familiar with. Also anticipated (for no good reason I guess) that the English language skills of more Japanese would be more than "Ha-rowww" (hello).

Anyway, thankyou to those who had suggestions. Did find one at Bic Camera store locally and wife's happy, so so am I! And there's only a JP plug in the bathroom austman.

Thanks for your entertaining update vetrade.
My initial comment was tongue in cheek.. ;)
It was just surprising that the hotel couldn't resolve it better.. IME, if this occurs the concierge will go & source one.
Anyway glad it worked out & you will surely enjoy Hakone & the other delights of Tokyo.
Safe travels,

Missed out on Hakone, jetlagger, but we're all "charged-up" and off to Mexico tomorrow.:p

That's a shame, Hakone is well worth a visit. Lesson learnt vetrade ? Power adapters are on my travel checklist.

Bad luck! But something to keep in mind if it happens elsewhere! :) The shaver sockets are often universal and are OK for small appliances (15-20W only).

Yes, good info for future reference, austman

yes, better preparation required next time but TBH the Tokyo stopover was a bit of an afterthought - we had one stopover unused on our RTW ticket and we'd only ever transited through NRT before so squeezed in a few extra days for Japan. A "proper" visit is still in the bucket list.

Nice that you have a positive mind.. Hope you enjoy Mexico. I was there a couple of weeks back & enjoyed my time immensely. :D

Since the problem has been solved - I don't feel quite so guilty about going off topic with my adaptor story.

I was in Osaka and had left my adaptor at a hotel in a different city. Asked the front desk for a replacement - which they didn't have and they were suitable mortified. Basically they dispatched a staff member to buy one for me, the concierge asked me what I was hoping to recharge I told him my phone and camera. He then wanted to put my sim card in his personal iphone and give it to me so I wasn't put out during the 30 mins it would take to get that adaptor to me and also to find me a camera to use (I declined).

Also got a bottle of whisky delivered to my door by the Manager on Duty who apologised for the "serious service lapse" - a better man would have pointed out that wasn't necessary over such a minor issue, but I took the bottle

Was reading this on the weekend when I realised I was on the same boat, left the adaptor out of my bag when packing, luckily the hotel had universal AC plugs, its a wonder more dont.
