Later this year I am flying QF MEL-SYD, connecting to SYD-LAX. I understand that once I disembark in SYD T3 I "re-checkin" at the transfer desk in T3, then take the Qantas transfer bus to T1 where customs is cleared, etc.

My question is: where does the QF transfer bus drop you in Sydney T1? Somewhere where you are forced to immediately clear customs / security and end up airside? Or somewhere in the regular landside part of the terminal, where you are free to wander the landside part of the terminal before clearing customs / security for the connecting flight?

I'm catching up with a colleague at the airport for an hour or two between the flights and want to make sure if I use the transfer bus I don't get deposited somewhere in T1 that will make it a hassle to get landside and meet him :-)

It puts you into the general landside area, up an escalator and you are at the check in desks.

Excellent, thanks for the info medhead.

One more quick question: is it a requirement to do the "re-checkin" at the transfer desk in T3? Or could I catch the bus to T1 as soon as I disembark the domestic flight (to get across there ASAP), then do the "re-checkin" at the regular INT check-in desks at T1?

There is no re-checkin at the transfer desk, they are just verifying you are eligible for the bus. You can go over whenever you wish then wander though T1.

From where the bus drops you off, you take the escalator up and then follow a corridor through. You come out just behind the check in row C also near the Qantas sales desk. If you already have your boarding pass then turn left. The first entrance on your left is the express path for customs and the next entrance after that is the normal customs entrance.

It is well sign posted and there will likely be a few people taking the same path as you.

If u already have your bp then they will often scan it. I think thats to add a note that you are onway to int.

Make sure you have an itin or something to prove you are eligible, they can be very problematic at times if they dont like you.
