Coming up I have an interesting combination of flights and it will be interesting to see where and how I need to check-in for the first one.

I am departing BNE on a QF operated domestic flight, using the AA codeshare and technically its a connection to an international flight (also AA codeshare operated by QF). However, the "connection" is overnight.

Firstly I very much doubt I will have any option for on-line check-in, even though aa.com is indicating it will/may be available at T-24.

So I assume I will have to check-in at the airport. I also doubt I will be able to use the self-check-in, being an AA codeshare flight. So I expect I am going to be using the old style agent-assisted check-in. Do they still have "priority" check-in queues for this? Even though I hope to be HLO, I think I am going to need to see an agent at the check-in desks rather than check-in at the BNE Domestic J lounge.

And if I do check a bag, I assume it won't be checked through to my international destination since its an overnight connection (about 22 hours). But I wonder if I will be checked in for the international sector and the subsequent connection after that (also AA flight number).

Oh well, I guess I will just turn up at the airport with plenty of time to spare and ask one of the check-in assistance staff where I should go. At least I can use the F check-in for my international sector if I am not already check-in with BP issued.

BNE domestic does have a dedicated "Priority" check-in line at the arrivals end of the Qantas terminal.

I also believe there is an international connection check-in line which is probably at the very end counters.

Your particular itinerary due to the overnight stop would really be classed as two separate journeys rathan than one with an international connection as you have a domestic flight BNE/SYD then an international flight SYD/??? the next day.

If you have your QF pnr you could give OLCI a go however if that doesn't work I wouldn't worry about trying the Next Gen kiosks. If the airport isn't busy, as you're OWE I would just use the Premium checkin queue or if it is busy just head straight up to the QP or JL & checkin there.

As you are OWE you are entitled to use the Premium checkin queue.

If you do check in a bag it will only be checked to SYD so you will need to pick it up then checkin again for the next day where you should be checked in & receive boarding passes for your first & subsequent flights.

From a ticket sale/fair perspective, its a connection. But form a check-in perspective, its two separate journeys as you say. So at BNE domestic, they could only check me in for BNE-MEL.

There is no QF PNR (that I could find) for the flights since they are AA codeshares. I only have the Sabre PNR. I was able to use the Premium line at the check-in desk (as a OneWorld Emerald) and walked pretty much straight to the check-in desk. The BP stated QF613 with "Sold as AA7324 printed in the Service Information section under my FF details. The last flight in my booking is a QF flight number (the return MEL-BNE) as there was no AA codeshare available. That sector shows a QF (Armadeus) PNR, but using QF Manage Your Booking does not show the initial BNE-MEL in the PNR.
As you are OWE you are entitled to use the Premium checkin queue.
Thanks. That is certainly what I did. I had not used personal check-in desks at BNE since they installed all the self-check-in kiosks and reduced the number of check-in desks. JohnK indicated above there was still a priority queue and I had no problems finding it or using it.

I did have to check the bag. The check-in agent insisted on weighing it and it weighed 8.9kg so had to go in the hold. Of course there were plenty of other people on the flight with bags that I expect weighed significantly more than 8.9kg, but it was over 7kg so had to go. But the check-in agent did issue a tag to MEL rather than SYD, so at least it got to the correct destination for me to collect when I arrived ;).

I might have to take a few things out and wear my jacket and load up my backpack a little more and hopefully the F check-in at MEL may be a little more "forgiving" allowing me to get away with maybe 7.9kg as carry-on. But I expect my traveling colleague will have a checked bag so it not going to be as much advantage as it would be if I was traveling solo.

There would still have to be a QF pnr as they are the operating carrier however I don't think it's a big deal whether or not you have that with you if you're able to use the Premium checkin queue.

It's not so much F checkin in MEL being "forgiving" more like whichever security company is doing the screening. When I flew BNE/SYD recently on QF8 my hand luggage was weighed & it was 7.6 kgs which they allowed.

yep, just now way for me to find the QF PNR. But all good.

I have found the security people checking weights are more lenient than the QF check-in agents. In my experience, QF check-in agents will not allow much over the published 7kg limit. Perhaps up to 8kg, but certainly not over if traveling in economy. Might get away with more if flying J or F.

But i have found the security checks seem to have a threshold closer to 9 or 10kg, especially if you have an Express card in view.

I have never had hand luggage weighed at f check in in SYD - flying J though. Generally my rollaboard would be 12kg but doesn't look heavy...

No problems at F check-in. The very nice lady asked if I wanted to check my bag and I said I would like carry it on. No problem. Nobody weighing at the security entry. Has Express card so bypassed security screening line. Then joined normal immigration queue, which was not long enough to warrant giving up an express card.

Check in for AA domestic flight. No EXP upgrade though :(. At T-100 i saw the F cabin (9 sats) go from empty to 7 occupied. So I assume there are at lease 7 EXP's ahead of me on he list. At least its only a 45 min flight. I think I can handle AA coach for a long after 15 hours of QF economy and a LAX T4 F Lounge visit to refresh/reset.

Now waiting in the MEL D Lounge for my boss to arrive to be my guest (QF NB).
