I am planning ahead for a trip into Europe. My preference is up through Asia but a ticket credit issue looks like I have to go via the US.

Looking for recommendation on best option for airline for a trip in J going from LAX or SFO into ZUR/ COP/ HEL or CDG.

Ideally I want to stay within Star Alliance.

I'd probably say Lufthansa or Swiss are two good options. No business class is perfect, but all round, Swiss and Lufthansa offer a decent combination of food and service and seating (as in if you add all three together, pros and cons, you get a reasonably high score).

Swiss. AF can be quite cheap, but of course not star alliance. Avoid BA unless you wan to see what bad J looks like.

Another vote for LX followed by LH. I did BA F and even that was a bad. UA is also an option but I would take them last over other *a carriers. To be fair my last few flights with UA were great. Which was shocking. Not sure if you can find them on west coast but LOT has some great J fares as does TK but will route you thru IST. If fares are an issue try pricing out of YYR, YYZ or YUL.

Would actually stay away from LH J unless on the 748, but even that doesn't have all aisle access.

Edit: hadn't realised that LH were retrofitting the 380s with their new J, which while being lie flat is still 2-2-2

I don't mind BA F, its sort of a bit retro...:p

The only airline I've found where you can easily redeem 4/5 x F award seats from any port in their network ... I suppose we all know why ;)

Any port, except from Sydney ......

Done it heaps of times... can book 5 x F to SIN and beyond quite easily.

EDIT - Monday 19th Sept you can book 6 F seats on BA 16.

Was about to book it myself but then saw the way seats are angled towards each other, doesn't seem to have much privacy. Should be good configuration for couples, not so much for solo traveler by the looks of it.

4/5? I've seen up to 7/8 on some routes! They are practically begging people to book with them :p

I've used BA as my "plan B" number of times before. Booked F seat well in advance and as soon as other more serious airlines release award seats quickly made the switch ;)
