A simple poll

If you are playing in the tourney, please choose the game you want to play. Polls open 7 days from now.

Cheers

Mr!

:D

I'd recommend an either/or:

1. Single stableford - it's quicker than stroke (once people learn to pick up their ball if they can't score on that hole)
2. Team Stableford - group a low handicaper (under 14) and a high handicaper (15 to 27).

In that way, you can actually play both...and have more winners

Voting on which golf game? Why? So if ambrose is the winner, so far 50% in the poll, what do you do if there is an uneven number of starters like 3, 5, 7? What if only 4 people turn up? Play a single 4 ball ambrose or two 2 ball ambroses? Ambrose is good for charity days where you have 40+ turning up. Also it is not fun if there is a low marker in the group and use their shot all the time.

Not interested in ambrose. I would like to challenge the golf course and have a few drinks with fellow AFFers after the game....

I've voted for a preference, but it's not important to me.

Stableford

Every course has a "Par/Stableford" index, rating the holes in (supposed) order of difficulty of scoring par on each the holes. 1 is hardest, 18 is easiest.

When at the tee for each hole, depending on their handicap and the hole's "index" a golfer will have 0, 1 or 2 "strokes" to subtract from their score on that hole to give a Nett score. (Let's not discuss those with + handicaps :p)

To determine the number of "strokes" a golfer has on a hole the following is used:
  • If a golfer's handicap is 1-18, they will have 1 stroke on holes with an index equal to or less than their handicap and 0 strokes on all others.
  • If a golfer's handicap is 19-36, 18 gets subtracted from the handicap. The golfer will have 2 strokes on all holes with an index equal to or less than the resultant figure and 1 stroke on all others.

A Nett Par will score 2 points, a "Nett" Bogey 1, after that you can't score so you "Scratch" and simply pick your ball up and proceed to the next hole.

For every stroke under "Nett" par you get an additional point, e.g. a Nett "Eagle" (2 under par) will score 4.

e.g. If on a par three hole a golfer has two "strokes" and scores an actual two on the hole they will have a nett 0 - three under par and score 5 points.

If on a par 4 a golfer has 1 "stroke" and scores 5, they have a nett 4 and will score 2 points.

A golfers scores for each of the 18 holes they play are totaled to make their stableford score. At the end of the day, the golfer with the highest total is declared the "winner".

There seems to be some unhappiness over playing Ambrose although the Poll doesn't indicate that.

To make myself clear, I am easy to whatever we play. Ambrose to me seemed the best game as everyone gets the benefit of the best player in your 4 and it keeps things fast.

I will organise what the masses want.

Whats the saying, "you can please some of the people some of the time but can't please all of the people all of the time"

Mr!

I am not playing in the tourney (havent picked up a club for about 7 years) but when I have played in things like I have found that Stableford levels the playing field a little. For those less expert in the field of golf you can often have an awful hole and playing stroke play means you are screwed for the rest of the game...

Agree with your reasoning JohnK about uneven numbers, the only problem I see is if we get a prime number of players - however I've played in 3 man ambroses before, but getting the right handicap (when you start having to use 3/8th etc, is confusing). To level the playing field in most ambrose events I have played, the high handicaper's tee shots must be used on a certain number of holes (generally 3 holes every 9, but depending on how many high handicapers in the group).

Spoken like a true golfer . It was a game created for individuals, however not everybody has the same single minded focus that you have JohnK. Others who aren't good golfers may prefer the team aspect, where their good shots can be applauded and their bad shots can be hidden.

Not when the high handicapers keep hitting their shots out of bounds and spend time looking for them .

Here here. The life of a Moderator as well

I am not trying to be nasty nor am I trying to sabotage the AFF golf challenge. I do not like ambrose, or scramble as it is sometimes called, or foursomes, whether Canadian or American, and any game of golf where I do not ultimately have a say in my final score. Does not mean that I am not a team player but team games can also be organised using stroke/stableford events.

Now I can understand that more people may be interested in attending an ambrose but it does not interest me at all. And sure I have played ambrose many times at charity golf days. There is a lot more to ambrose than restricting each player to a certain number of tee shots. If you have a low marker in the team then birdies and pars are still achievable as the low marker is still likely to put the second shot on the green or very close to it.

Golf was created by an individual for individuals. I get out on a golf course to enjoy myself but also to challenge the golf course. There is no greater satisfaction than hitting a drive 240 down the middle and putting the next shot on the green and sinking the putt for a biridie. There is nothing more frustrating than to hit a ball out of bounds, duff a shot, hit a shot into the water, have a fried egg in the bunker, end up behind the tree, three putt or even four putt on the green. Unfortunately all of these are negated in a game of ambrose as there are 3 other golfers in the group that can make up for your mistakes.

We can just as easily have a stroke/stableford competition and play a 2 ball best ball or aggregate or 4 ball best ball or aggregate. Ambrose is a novelty. Stroke/stableford/par is how golf should be played and handicaps are there to equal the playing field....

Oh, you saw me on the first hole last time I played . Or was that the second? And the third?? Hmm, that pretty much described all the first nine. And it got worse on the back nine .

You guys have just described why I don't play golf :!:

I get my stress in other forms thanks.
