Hi, I am new and this is my first post. I'm flying Cathay Pacific and is it better to register my Qantas number or Asia Miles number to earn points for my flight sectors. Since Qantas points don't expire I thought that would be better value for long term since I am not a regular traveller and only travel once in 1.5/2 years.

Welcome to AFF sh@z.

First point, Qantas points do expire after 18 months of non-use.

What is the fare basis for the CX flight? Some fares have better earning rates than others? See the link for further details.

Given you're an irregular flyer (not that there's anything wrong with that ;) )it would be better to focus on one frequent flyer program to at least get some value.

Welcome to the forum

This may be of interest (but in not 100% up to date)
OneWorld - Ruby
OneWorld - Sapphire

As above check if an eligible fare in the CX and/or QF freq flyer programs to earn points. Some low cost CX fares earn nil miles. More common with CX than other airlines
Check the points expiry for both QF & CX

This question is a bit like asking, "which is better, apples or oranges?"

The best answer I would imagine would take into account who you would fly the most, how often you fly them and what you want to get out of your frequent flyer membership.

For instance, CX treat their own members really well, but even if you're travelling in premium classes it can be hard to get up to the top. While QF's scheme allows you to get status relatively cheaply from premium classes, but they may not treat you as well (though reports suggest that they do on CX). If your goal is to burn the earned miles for upgrades and award flight, there's a whole minefield of what can and can't be done to understand.

as a good rule of thumb, mileage earning will be better on the same carrier's program vs another carrier.

eg should you be travelling V-Class on CX you would earn 100% Asia Miles VS 50% QFF Points

(also if you are QF Silver/Gold/Plat you will earn no Status Bonus from travelling on Cathay)

Welcome to AFF sh@z.

First point, Qantas points do expire after 18 months of non-use.

That requires a little explanation. Qantas points expire after 18 months of account inactivity, but it is easy to keep it active. Get a Woolworths Every Day Rewards (EDR) card (free) from your nearest Woolworths, link it to your Qantas Frequent Flyer (FF) account then once in 18 months spend $31 at Woolworths and the 1 point earned will keep your account active.

if the booking fare earns reasonable points with AAdvantage, I would credit to them. Much better redemption rates than QF...

But as sh@z is an infrequent flyer and already has 2 freq flyer accounts OneWorld airlines having a 3rd does not help in the long term. Will take a long time to get a balance that can be used

It does depend how many CX/QF points are in these accounts and when they will expire. If sh@z is resident in Aust QF is easy to keep alive with Woolworth’s.. Is harder & more effort to keep AA miles alive, for no cost

Welcome to AFF sh@z!

If your fare class earns points on Qantas then you are better crediting to Qantas as you have more opportunities to accrue points in Australia in QFF then you do in Asia Miles.
