we are booked on a tour in July to Darwin and top end and would like to know the best travel insurance to take out

What risks are you most concerned about?

If you're worried about covid cancellations, I am not sure if any insurer is covering that right now.

I got an email from COTA this morning to say insurance is back. I'd be looking at one of the aggregators to see what is available. As Anna says - depends what you want insurance for

I presume that is what the Tour Company has insisted upon - we had to do that for a Intrepid Tours safari trip a couple of years ago. I asked the guide about that need, given we were Australians, in Australia, and he said it was more to do with emergency transfers. They had one person have an episode up on the top of one set of falls and had to be helicoptered out - which had to be paid by someone.

We went with the basic policy offered through Qantas, which at that time was with QBE. It provided the coverage we needed for that trip. For example, we didn't need hire car excess coverage, or loss of luggage. Obviously we didn't have to worry about COVID restrictions. The new Qantas Travel Insurance is issued by NIB and has a COVID specific section (Section 11) which may cover what you need. But, it also depends on whether you need one-off trip insurance, or a multi-trip policy. There's a lot out there. The Travel Insurance forum has some recent links on the topic
