Does a points upgrade waitlist take priority over an upgrade bid or is it the other way around? Also, when would a points upgrade waitlist clear? Does fare class and status make a difference?

I would like to know this too. From reports it seems the points waitlist is 72 hours from flight. upgrade bids are 48h.

I'm not sure what happens when you put in both.

Well, I'm going to test out that theory with an upcoming flight. I don't think the 72 hours is true as I've already passed the T-72 mark and waitlist hasn't cleared yet. However, it may be 48 hours for the waitlist as I've noticed that the upgrade bids tend to clear around T-24.

The Points Upgrade list is processed before Bid Now upgrades. But sometimes some seats can become available between the Points Upgrade list being processed, and the Bid Now upgrades being processed.

Timing of Points Upgrade processing varies depending on international vs domestic (for a Plaitinum One)

Status is a factor, and for Platinum it is within 72 hours either way.

This is the Velocity forum so I’m not so sure about this advice

err. good point.

In the case of Velocity, they start processing the waitlist 5 days out ... but reading the bid rules, I am not sure points upgrades are actually prioritised.

The points-upgrade-waitlist has never worked for me. When a J award seat comes available it does nothing. Needed to remove the upgrade request and put it in again to get the upgrade to go thru.

I suppose it might be processing once per day or something

Well, I can officially say that the waitlist for the upgrade came through at T-48 ahead of the upgrade bid. At the time, only 2 out of the J seats had been taken and the D fare was still available.

I would expect given VA has the Plat 4 times a year benefits that there ORDER of PRIORITY might have subtle differences to the competitor but were very clear when they note;
  • Upgrade availability is limited and controlled by Virgin Australia. Availability may be limited or not available at all particularly during peak travel periods (e.g. school and public holidays) and on international flights, due to the popularity of these services. A cancellation and amendment fee may apply.
  • For operational reasons not all Business Class seats are made available for upgrades. This means that there may still be empty seats on departure.

PS Peak travel periods in QF J probably aren’t “during school holidays” that period would expect lite loadings in their pointy ends aside cricket or tennis execs …. (The AFL sponsored by VA)
Perhaps a point of difference between the two

Aha now we understand what's meant by Upgrade-Waitlist. It's a misnomer, you're not waitlisted for anything. If a biz award seat does come available at any time, that "waitlist" will do nothing. [And to get that seat you need to cancel your upgrade request and put it in again.]

What is DOES mean? That at T-48, long after all the paid-upgrades have been handed out, whatever's left is sometimes possibly assigned to you.

yes , looks like it ; when they can't sell them as revenue tickets is when they are offered to points upgrade waitlist. I have always opted for waitlist using points but had no success till now.
