I have searched for an answer to this question, there are similar questions, but not quite what I'm after.....

Mr E and I are travelling SIN - ADL QF082 08/01, and have put in for an upgrade from Economy to Business. We have linked PNR's.
Mr E requested the upgrade, as he is Platinum, and we are hoping that may help with our upgrade chances, but the FF points are distributed evenly between mine
and his accounts, and I can't use family transfer to get the points into his account, as I have already used my allocation this year.

Here is the question: Will Qantas take points from both accounts if there isn't enough points in the account of the person requesting the upgrade?
Or should Mr E cancel the upgrade request, transfer points from his account to mine, and then I redo the upgrade request?
Will then this affect our chances of an upgrade, as I'm only SG....

No - if you don't have enough points then they will not process the upgrade request.

Oh well, not a huge issue in the larger scheme of things, it just means I'll have to transfer points to my account and resubmit the request.
I have to admit that this is where Virgin's FF Program beats Qantas, the ability to pool points for family use is a very useful benefit!
Are you listening Qantas!?

No need to resubmit the request, just transfer the points across no less than a week or so before the flight.

In the OP MrE has submitted the request and it will be MrsE where the points come from hence needing to submit a new request.

As there PNR'S are linked (2 separate tickets?), do you have to submit a request from both accounts/tickets?

No - the OP needs to log into their account (being the source of the points) and bring up "Your Bookings".

Toward the bottom of the page, under the list of bookings there is the "Upgrade a family member" area to enter Mr E's booking data to submit that upgrade request.

For the OP's own upgrade, they can click the 'upgrade' link to the right of the listed booking (or employ the lower box as well).
