Why does VA "status review" take so long?

My membership anniversary was about 2 weeks ago, and the Velocity website still shows:

Why does it take so long?

I think it's because they're giving Status Credits as long as they can to register. SCs from FlyBuys can take as long as three weeks to turn up in your account, and SCs from travel on Virgin's international partners can take some time as well.

The Status Review can be frustrating, but you can still use your old card/status for a month after the review date, and the bottom line is that it means they're giving you as many opportunities as possible to retain your status.

Careful of what you wish for.

I had an issue once where I had deliberately dropped status, but expected to fly enough to re-earn it before the end of the review month, while still basking under the previous status.

The review was completed in about 10 days and my status dropped. I had flights to regain that status quickly in the last week or so of the review period and had expected to travel with the previous status.

It meant I did fly at a lower status than planned with the most obvious issue being loss of status bonus.

I had the opposite issue. I was sitting on 993 credits and they bumped me to platinum 4 days before the next flight that would have taken me over the threshold

A family member just flew the last sector needed to upgrade to gold, but it was just as the velocity membership information became unavailable so we can’t check if it’s credited. Do you know if they starting counting sectors and credits for requalifying only after the status review has happened (however long that takes nowadays), or do they start the count immediately after that last qualifying sector?

As an aside, the family member in question let me have a look at her velocity profile the other day. I spotted that she had more than enough credits for gold but was short one qualifying sector, which she had to fly by December. I’m so glad I checked. I can’t believe people don’t check these things! She’s so excited about being able to get into SQ lounges now.
