Why is CX J class nearly $2,000 cheaper than ME3?

In an earlier thread I asked about PE tickets Perth/Toronto return. I was looking further and found that for the travel dates - out 20/716 return 20/8/16 - CX PE was @$,4400 but I could get CX J for @$6,900.

I then looked at Emirates, Etihad & Qatar for the same dates. All are one stop flights to Canada (Qatar to Montreal instead of Toronto) - flights are slightly longer. Their prices range from @$8250 to @$8800. QF, NZ etc all require 2 stops are another $1,000 or so and involve flying on North American airlines for 1 leg.

CX usually seems to get a pretty good wrap for the J service, at least I think so. So why the pretty large difference to the other carriers? Thanks for any responses.

My wife and I have flown CX J and the seat was amazingly comfortable and I actually slept very well. If you can afford it I would definitely do CX and having just one stop is much easier.

Dale.

Cathay are great, I would definitely recommend them.

Good luck figuring out any logic behind airline pricing

Thanks for the replies, the answer is pretty much what I thought then - plucked from the ether.

This will probably be a once-off (have flown QF J Per-Sin on points in the days before enhancements meant it was unobtainable for me), but have recently sold our rental property and given plenty to the kids so we will spoil ourselves on a long trip.

Glad to see people have been happy with Cathay.

I guess I'll be the outlier here and note that I found the CX 777 J seat to be small and hard. I flew from JFK-HKG and was very constricted in the seat when trying to sleep.

Nor do they provide pyjamas so my QF ones got another work out. :)

i don't find the seat small - but agree it is hard. I use the duvet as a mattress, and request a blanket from economy to keep warm if needed (the cabins are usually on the warmer rather than cooler side though).

the window seats are supposedly a bit bigger than those in the centre.

We recently flew CX J JFK to HK and HK to SYD.
Fantastic experience and service is excellent. Enjoy!

I am also considering using CX J class from SYD to Toronto in June next year, their price is about the same as you've received from PER, just under $7k. Using QF and QF codeshare via LAX comes to about $8k. CX J Is very good, and the bonus for me in using them is a days stoppover in Hong Kong to catch up with friends and colleagues.

The actual cheapest fare I could find, for a while was using Jet Airways, via Singapore, via Mumbai, Via Brussels...no thanks, I'm time poor.

Once again, thanks for the replies - general consensus seems to be that we will never figure out the pricing reasons and that most consider CX J is fine. The chance of a day stopover in HK - I've never been there - is also a point in favour.

Go for it !! Both CX J and Honkers are great

That is a hot price, i normally see 8-10K for CX to Toronto

CX are pretty good in Business. I think the 777 has a small 2 row cabin at the very front. If you get it, and you don't get a screaming kid then its a nice quiet environment to be in.
I personally like the herringbone layout rather then side by side (or funky BA cabin I am trying next year...)

If they have it, the beef pie I totally recommend

Thanks for the advice. Had seen it on a friends seat map but forgotten about it.
