Why is there no dessert in J with dinner?

Flew 2 dinner flights in J over the weekend. Noticed the 'dessert' was two chocolates. Apparently this is because I received a 'side salad' instead of dessert. This 'side salad' was a bowl of plain salad leaves with a separate dressing. I believe the definition of salad means more than 1 ingredient?!

For the $500++ people are paying to fly J, why are they not provided with a dessert (even if its a simple $2 cake or ice cream in a bowl) or at least given the option of having a side salad OR a dessert? I would not call the J dinner provided on 2+ hour dinner flights substantial at all.

Thanks

Which routes were you on? Does seem a bit lean.

On MEL-HBA (1 hr) last week, no 'salad' (thank God); main was a very nice braised steak and 2 veg, with tub of ice cream and choccies.

Edit: was a 737 flight

Every J dinner on the 737s I've had has been the salad. I agree with the OP, VA you should look at swapping out the pitiful excuse of a salad for proper desert like lunch. The two chocolates don't cut the mustard!

I too have never had a desert with J Dinner on 737 flights. I would like to see this changed.

MEL-BNE-MEL - each is a 2+ hour flight.

Done the same thing on the same flight before - side salad of mixed leaves indeed with the two chocolates, which are actually Paton's chocolate-coated macadamias. For me, that's sufficient, though it would be nice if Virgin had at least plunger coffee on offer outside of breakfast times.

Qantas is much the same in this regard (though it's usually a tiny Toblerone rather than a couple of Patons), although funny enough, on Qantas there is usually the choice of one warm dish and one salad. If you choose the salad main, you do not get a side salad (funny that) but a sweet instead (e.g. cake, pudding).

Both airlines seem to offer cakes rather than side salads for refreshment services. Hmmm......

I suppose if you really wanted to, if they still allow this, couldn't you ask for a Spotted Cow cookie or the like from the Economy selection, free of charge?

Funny; Both 737 J flights I've had in the last few days late in the afternoon (BNE-SYD, SYD-OOL) I have had Small Tubs of Ice Cream for Deserts - Although they somewhat classified both meals as an "Afternoon Snack" (I don't care what the call it, its all pretty much the same, just different options on different flights...)

Although I will mention also; Was on a Flexi in Y MKY-BNE or BNE-MKY a week or so back. Got give this MASSIVE bar of Toblerone for Desert! Best-Desert-Ever! :D Trumps any J Desert I've had thus far...

Prehap's it has something to do with what actual food they load in for J?; I noted on my SYD-OOL flight last night that they only loaded two meals for the two of us in J; The dude in 1F took the Cheese Platter (I agree with the rest of you, had it on the BNE-SYD afew days before; Bland if you ask me... Not to mention confusing); I had some Asian Noodles/Pasta instead with the Hockey Pokey Ice Cream, the other only option left. Twas good :) (Was temped to ask for more... Just got the crew to keep refilling me glass with Lemonade instead :? Meh....)

That's what I was getting at: if the service is designated as "refreshment" or "snack" then there is no side salad (at least I think so) and you get a sweet/dessert/pudding/cake/etc.

During meal times - "lunch" or "dinner" - you get the side salad and two Patons instead. I suppose the main dish of a meal service is meant to be hot and/or more substantial to that served during a refreshment service, which means they aren't going to serve as big a dessert/sweet (not my conclusion - just a guess).

See I'd love to see VA take one small hint from UA and provide some pretty damn good ice cream sundaes for dessert in J ;-)
