Now that petrol price has fallen – may continue to fall deeper, will airlines slash their airfare price?

They're already slashing their prices, and it's because of the lack of bums in seats, not because of the price of oil. CX is currently offering returns to Europe out of MEL for about $7800 in J, and UA is offering fares to the US east coast for about the same.

It's a good time to be traveling...

There, I fixed that for you :-)

Travelling not so much, because of the exchange rates.

So what would you consider a trip to the UK? Flying or travelling? the $/GBP rate not moved too much since I was there last...

If you fly somewhere, even domestically ,you are travelling.
Whether you do it for business or leisure, travel is travel and now is a
good time to be travelling by air.

Even with the lowering AUD, myself as a leisure traveller, can opine that there will be still some very good bargains out there. For eg. hotels are offering quite good discounts / promotions at the moment due to weakening demand, and when you factor in the lower AUD seem good value.

And its not only hotels.I get a few emails from restaurants in the USA.They are reducing prices dramatically-usually eat before 6pm and the reductions can be up to 70% on pre-GFC prices.

Sure in the last few months even the better counties i have been to have seen a 10-20% drop in hotel rates and much easier to get the better rates.
I am currently in a hotel at 15% under our best negotiated corp rate which in the past would have been the cheapest rate available anywhere.

Airfares would need to drop further if the airlines want to entice more people to travel. It is not jusst business and first class airfares that need to reduced but more importantly WHY airfares.

And then the uncertainty of the global economic crisis and poor exchange rates does not help. The USD and JPY are too low in my opinion and the Euro at 2:1 is not very attractive. There may be some discounting of hotel accommodation in top end properties but the 2-3 star properties, where majority of travellers book their stays, have not been reducing their hotel rates.

With all these sales going on this will really kills any initiatives to book early...

Imagine if you have just booked two tickets to london right before Qantas's "buy two and the second one is free" sale (a while ago), or you have booked to travel with your kids right before the Qantas kids flies free sale ....

JQ has just dropped (again) their NZ prices, it was 149, now 99...
