Hi everyone

I have a question for those in the know...

I was booked on a Mel-Syd flight today at 1630. My meeting finished early so I headed to the airport at midday. I was on a K fare, so presumed I should be able to get an earlier flight... unfortunately it was (apparently) extremely busy today and all flights were overbooked, so was not automatically offered an earlier flight.

The staff at QP put me on standby as a result for the 1400, 1500 and 1530 flights... in the meantime, I enquired about upgrading to a J fare, and whether flying J would mean I would then get one of the spare J seats on earlier flight. I was told it could help, so decided to upgrade using my points, on the 1630 flight.

Lo and behold, I was given a standby ticket for the 1530 flight, but in cattle class (side note, I was the last to board and there were spare seats in business - what the?!)

Anyway my account has been deducted 5000 points, but I was sitting all the way in back (row 51 to be exact).

Will those points be deducted from my account considering:

1) I was place in economy
2) There were spare business class seats on my flight

Finally, just one more random side note: some twit on my flight, took a thermos which leaked brown liquid all over myself and another pax. It leaked from the overhead locker down, through the ceiling above us. We spent 1/3 of the flight cleaning up (the seats, overhead lockers and ourselves). It was rather foul.

Advice would be to make a complaint but Qantas aren't responsible for other stupid passengers. As far as the deduction without getting the upgrade though, you should follow that up.

Here are the terms and conditions relating to On departure Upgrades (my bolding):

17.1 On Departure Upgrade Awards are available by redeeming Points at the rates published at this website. Points will be deducted from a Member's account at the time that a request is successfully processed.

17.2 On Departure Upgrades are available only to Members who have access to Qantas Club lounges. They are not available from airport lounges operated by third parties or from QantasLink lounges.

17.3 On Departure Upgrades may be requested only for a one-class upgrade from discounted or full Economy to Business class on Qantas Australian domestic services (QF400 and above). On domestic legs of international services, On Departure Upgrades may be requested from Economy to Premium Economy class, Economy to Business class, or Premium Economy to Business Class where Premium Economy and Business class service is available. On Departure Upgrades are not available on international services (QF1-399).

17.4 On Departure Upgrades may be redeemed only from 3 hours before departure until boarding commences.

17.5 The provision of On Departure Upgrades is subject to availability in the applicable booking class, airport operational requirements and catering availability. Special meals may not be available in the upgraded class. Qantas may occasionally have to restrict this facility without prior notice on some routes or under special circumstances (for example where there is an unexpected disruption to services resulting in heavy demands on Qantas Club personnel).

17.6 Once confirmed and processed, any Points redeemed for an On Departure Upgrade will not be re-credited or refunded for any reason, except where the Points are incorrectly redeemed as a result of an error by Qantas.
Since you had already requested the upgrade, yours points were deducted. You then chose to forgo the upgrade and the points by electing to accept the earlier economy class seat.

So the advice here is that if you request an upgrade, don’t also try to get on an earlier flight, as you’ll most likely get the upgrade, but wont fly on that flight :p

Advice is to choose to request an upgrade or request for an earlier flight. If requesting an earlier flight, wait until you have a confirmed seat and then apply for an ODU on that new flight.

Thank-you all for helping me understand the situation and for the advice!

I'll know for next time!

As for the leaking thermos, I don't think Qantas can be held accountable for the actions of a person who clearly thinks that you can't get good quality coffee in Melbourne, so has to bring their own, on a plane, in a 'Hello Kitty' thermos...

I had a Syd-Bris-Syd flight today. No drama's and no mid air thermos explosions :p
