Thanks as well, Mal

Yeah, thanks for posting the link and details Mal. (though I never win these things) :(

Wouldnt you have to pay GST on $2000 of duty free if you declared it as you brought it into the country?

Thanks though - I have registered - here's hoping :D

A slight change of topic, however whilst talking about Duty Free the following site is worth a look when travelling to/from NZ.

Duty Free Stores New Zealand - Duty Free NZ - Free delivery to all New Zealand airports

and for entry exit through Adelaide and the Gold Coast try

Duty Free Stores Australia - Adelaide Airport - Gold Coast Airport

I've used the NZ link when travelling to/from NZ and found them quite competitive (20% discount on alcohol (incl Scotch NM)) but I have not tried the OZ version.

I probably should add that the NZ prices are substantially cheaper than any OZ prices I've found.

Since we have strayed a little off topic I feel empowered to make the following observations .....

Whilst on the way out of SYD T1 last week I bought 2 x 1 litres of booze that had a $20 discount voucher and over $200 of cosmetics/perfume which had a similar credit. I fronted at the counter and confirmed that a $40 discount would be applied and then told the COC to bag it up for collection later in the week upon my return.

"Sorry", she said. "That means you can only get a $10 discount as you will be 'buying' the duty free from arrivals, not departures."

"WTF!", says I, "Isn't this the one and the same company?"

As it turns out, it seems not. So being of good Scottish heritage I said "Well bag it up now and I'll take it with me." So I had to lug it all around Manila and then check my bags on the way back to Sydney. I hadn't done that for over 2 years and was reminded why. After a leisurely deplaning at Sydney (I was in the Y exit row of a 767) and the usual queue to get the passport stamped, I arrived at a very static conveyor belt and waited 10+ minutes before it started. Then the bags came through in roughly the correct order so it was another 5 minutes before I spotted mine rolling down the chute. The only advantage to this was that a customs lady walking around the belt came up to me, asked a few questions, and then gave me a green stamp. It seems to pay to be dressed in semi-business attire and standing on your own.

So whilst the pick-up on return is a good way to avoid all the liquids hassle, there are some gotchas when it comes to special deals. Plus with the Aussie dollar being so strong some of the foreign duty-free is looking pretty good (the prices in Manila were all in USD!).

Cheers,

Andrew

You will be shocked to hear that when I arrived back through customs in BNE yesterday I did not have any scotch with me  . As this was my second return in as many weeks, I decided to use this one as a chance to bring Mrs NM a peace offering - which cost a lot less than my taste in scotch  . That much be my first scotch-less entry in many years.

Is this one of those hypothetical situations you keep talking about NM, because it certainly isn't a believable one :?:
