We stayed in St Emelion-we were reliaant on public transport. We did a half day vineyard trip by bus that was great-will try & track some details if you are interested

I appreciate yoru comments Grogan. I have tasted out of Dijon as well. Burgundy is the Apellation

Bordeaux is a different Apellation further west though

If someone could shed some light on this, but I was wondering whether one would have much problems pulling these types of trips while speaking zero french?

We spent a week in Champagne touring and tasting and had no problems with our lack of the French language. One of the better trips we have done.

FUnny you say that you were in Champagne.

That is exactly where I will be for 4 days before I go to Bordeaux

In Burgundy and Epernay 2 years ago and certainly recommend the places we stayed:

A classic humungous chateau, with a very nice restaurant:

Hôtel-Golf Château de Chailly
Rue de dessous, Pouilly-en-Auxois
Ph: + 33-3-8090-3030

A bed and breakfast in Epernay within walking (and staggering) distance of Moet & Chandon"

Le Clos Raymi
3, Rue Joseph de Venoge
51200 Epernay
Ph: +33-3-2651-0058

As always YMMV

Not sure of your budget, however if you want some suggestions.

Visit Epernay where all the champagne houses are and stay at the Royal Champagne. 2 nights is good.

You also should stay a night or two at Le Château D'Etoges. Smaller town about an hour from Epernay but amazing grounds.

Both have kick cough restaurants attached to the hotels.

Assume you will drive through the Loire Valley on the way?

Chateau d’Etoges : hotel, restaurant gastronomique & Spa, près d’Epernay & Reims en Champagne / Charming chateau hotel in Champagne with gourmet restaurant near Epernay and Reims, champagne cellar tour and tasting, perfect place for honeymoon and mar

We toured through France, stopping at Epernay and Beaune just last year. Beaune is gorgeous - arrive for a Saturday and visit their local market on the cobblestone streets. we stayed in the old part of Beaune, so a quick walk to everywhere. In Epernay we stayed in a B&B just around the corner from Moet et Chandon. We booked a tour at Moet before we left, and needed to as they book out. Fascinating to tour the Cellars, see the original Dom vintage bottles, and so many bottles of Moet lined up.
Love Love Love France and this area is simply stunning. The Tour de France had passed by just a day earlier so we missed that unfortunately.

Nice one Pushka. It's an awesome tour of the Moët cellars. Ended up buying a few bottles of Dom Oenotheque at the end. Have drunk one recently and its definitely in my top 5 bottles I have drunk.

The Moët tour was the better of the 3 cellars that we did. Mercer was ok, they have a little train that takes you through, but I was we'll pissed by than...
