Hi all,

I've got approx 1mil FF points to burn and currently earned 250 SC's which re-quals me as Silver FF. Need another 450 for Gold and like 1200 for Platinum. What do you reccomend is the best and fastest method to gain Platinum? (or even Platinum1 maybe?) I've got until 30th November and reside in Sydney...

Thanks all !

Reuben

Wow... that thread has a lot of info! Thanks for that... didnt come across that and just noticed the thread is Sticky, my bad.. Appreciate pointing me in that direction!

From my experience, planning a long way ahead isn't always a great option. I did that last year. I had an October requal date and did a few status runs using JASA in March/April to maintain platinum. As it turns out, with a few unexpected trips, I ended up with almost double the SC needed to maintain WP. And they went to waste! It depends on your individual travel habits, but look ahead for stuff you'll actually need to do before doing a run just for the sake of SC's.

Good example, I'll probably fall a little short this year so I was looking to do the CBR-HBA run. With the current double SC's, I can do a SYD-ROK return on fLEXI-saver netting 160SC and can actually get some use out of the trip. Beats going to Tasmania for the hell of it.

EDIT: just re-read your post....

the CBR-SYD-HBA is a good earner... All depends if you want to travel somewhere too.

N860CR - thank you for the advice. Most defintely will have to make a close look at my schedule. Problem is, if I don't plan ahead I'm afraid there wont be any ASA's available and I will miss out entirely on gaining Gold/Platinum status..

nlagalle - thanks for the post. I am based in Sydney...

Problem with Sydney there isn't too many connections. I mentioned the CBR run because to fly to HBA to must travel to either sydney or Melbourne first, therefore 2 segments but it's priced as one. CBR is easy to get to if you are in SYD, you can fly or drive..

Why do you want to burn 1Mil points getting to WP? You could use those for good value award flights and if one of those awards got you to the US you could do a cash status run.

I wonder this too. Your points are yours to use as you see fit of course and there are several factors such as future plans and whether you anticipate being able to continue accruing such a stash of points, but using those points for FASAs/JASAs to places you actually want to go would seem a better idea, and you'd get most/all the benefits of status anyway.

If really chasing status four of the TSV-BNE-DRW returns[SUP]1[/SUP] plus the positioning flights would get you to platinum with a healthy balance left over.[SUP]2[/SUP] I think many people are in agreement though, WP1 is definitely not worth chasing unless you're already very nearly there (all that flying and you can't even book the spa ;) :p). Save the points for more Any Seat Awards.

[SUP]1[/SUP] With the availability of the cheap seats, adding hotel costs
[SUP]2[/SUP] Even sweeter with the points you earn from the ASAs

Agree with the last two posters - keep your points for Int F/J and don't worry about status. If you really want it fly F to LAX & do a run.

FWIW, if you travel F you will have superior status than plain old WP

That's a long thread but, in the middle of it I posted this one that might prove to be useful:
http://www.australianfrequentflyer....us-run-options-quick-35258-14.html#post603790

As stated by others, the best way to get the SCs for WP is to head to the US and do a status run using YUPP fares. The problem is that you will be paying rather than using points, apart from the trip over and back. I did one a couple of months ago that saw me cruise through from NB to WP. You'd be able to travel F class (AA style) for the trip and still have your points in hand for J class back in Oz.

There are some elements though where being WP has marginal benefit over just F - right at the moment i can't quite recall but it will come to me - generally though I agree that F is better than WP.

Hi everyone,

Thank you for all your quick responses, for your opinions and for directing me to other locations with status runs. I looked into all the information that you have presented to me... agree that the best option would be to head to the US and do a paid status run there... I am planning to head to the US though around August, though unfortunately there are no QF ASA tickets available in J or F for dates that I want (to LAX). I have Marco Polo Diamond (via Centurion) so maybe I will try book flights using their system given my status there.

This thread was probably a thought which was not explored enough as you guys are right... no point burning 1mil or so points just to reach Platinum, rather fly in F to places that I actually want to go !

Thanks for bearing with a newbie :)

Not sure if you looked closely at the Status run thread but if you have the points I feel they are better than cash and you dont need to burn 1M, 180000 is what it takes to hit WP from 0 SC, thats a long way from 1M, but that is with a copayment of $1750.

Thank you for the response markis10.

No, I didn't notice that it was only 180k points, the $1750 is reasonable as well. I thought it would be much more since no one stated it. Just calculating the flying time needed as need to work around my work schedule. I was looking through the posts by 'gizzard' for status runs from SYD, I could possibily earn 200 SC's a month (by doing a return of SYD-xBNE-TSV), starting from June, this would just give me enough to reach WP by my cut off date of 30th November.

Out of interest, when do you guys do status runs? Considering many of you would be working fultime or owning your own businesses. Do you make a weekend away out of it or just take a day off to do a status run and work inbetween flights in lounge?

If you have to work in TSV then you are in a great position for some runs, a day spent to DRW and back soon adds up!

Wowzers... that is awesome !

I envy that! I may even be able to reach P1 using these methods... you never know !

I am having a quick look at ASA's as we speak :)

P.s. Over what period of time was your above schedule achieved in?

I'm glad the post helped. The SYD-xBNE-TSV run can be done on a Saturday, return in the day as can the run to ISA for a few points more. If you can tie in a trip with a further onward flight TSV-xBNE-DRW then you can rack up 480 SCs for the return but it would require a couple of nights in TSV.

Thanks for the extra info, your post most defintely did help.

Unfortunately I probably wont be able to spend time in Townsville and have an onward trip as I don't really have any reason to go there/business to do there. I do fly Syd/Melb very often, though I do not think there is a status run route to do there.

Just weighing up at the moment if it's worth starting to do a status run with an aim for WP by 30th Nov or to start next year once my Marco Polo Diamond form Centurion expires...
