I vaguely remember this being asked before but I couldn't find it in a search.

I'm dropping 2 family members off for a QF domestic flight this week connecting in Sydney to international. I thought if I'm driving them all the way to the airport I may as well guest them into the lounge QP (they're travelling Y).

From experience (I know it's probably against the rules), should I take a chance and try using J check-in even through I'm not travelling?

Taking them to the lounge is fine but checking in at J counters is not allowed.

However some people have done it and they do not usually mind but I would be prepared for a rejection and personally I would not do it.

I do it ALL the time, including F check in for OS travel. I never get questioned at J, DOM and OS and have in recent memory, been "spoken to" at F - but only once!

Go for it, I would be surprised if they turn you away from the J counter!

Mr!

I think Anat0l asked the same question recently and from memory the consensus was not to use his Platinum status to use premium check-in for his father who is travelling overseas on QF. I know some people get away with it but premium check-in is supposed to be there for people who are travelling on the day.

And searching "WP using J check-in for friends/family" next time is not going to give back many useful results either.

Mr!

I would expect nothing less from you :D

Still, on the topic, I don’t think it’s right to use, but by all means try your luck, and if you get turned down, you know why.

Thanks John. Insightful as always. I'll be sure to keep an eye out for the premium check-in police.

Depending on which check-in staff you encounter it is possible to be turned away. I have witnessed people turned away.

Personally I use OLCI all the time but do not print an A4 boarding pass. I tried using the OLCI queue in BNE and I was told to go to the appropriate queue as I did not have proof I used OLCI.

My point is some check-in staff are sticklers for the rules.

Nice Idea but IMHO/OE:
Head straight for the DOMESTIC to INTERNATIONAL dedicated check in area.
Less people will be in that queue almost guaranteed .

An update on this for anyone interested. It wasn't a problem because for whatever reason the bag drop queue for OLCI had no one it it but the normal bag drop queue was huge.

Also the lady in the J lounge was nice enough to let us in even though I wasn't flying.

Did you use premium check-in?

This should never an issue. Hopefully not giving away too much information but I was able to have 3 guests in the BNE business lounge yesterday evening and I probably could have had more if I tried.

Don't mean to resurrect an old thread but, well, I will. :p

I'm traveling to AKL from SYD next week with my mother, I have Gold status, she has Bronze.
I'm booked in Business, it wasn't until later she decided she was able to come and just booked her own Economy ticket, oddly planned trip I know but we'll both be coming back together.

Anyway, since I have status, and technically we're traveling together albeit not on the same booking/class, can she use the Business check-in counter?

She'll be using one of my Qantas Club Comp. Invitations if that helps any. :-|

Cheers!

edit: to clarify, we are on the same flight.

Yes, you should be able to check-in together.

As a Gold member you are entitled to take a guest into the lounge, so why use a comp invitation?

Oh right *slaps forehead*, forgive me, I've only been gold a few weeks. :D

Checking in and lounge access is the least of your problems - what are you going to do when you get to the door of the aircraft and you're directed to a comfy seat and your Mum is banished down the back? In my experience, it takes a lot of practice in front of a mirror to offer your Mum the seat in a way that makes her grateful for the offer but unwilling to accept it...
