Hey guys,

Following the recent baggage handler joining up on this forum i decided that i would also create an account too.

I have been following these forums for quite a while. Obviously i won't be 'representing' QANTAS, and my views are my views only and not of the companies. Can't 'officially' say anything as per out EBA blah blah blah!

But if you have any general questions i'd be happy to answer them, even on the JQ front (i represented them for a few years).

Welcome to AFF QFCSA! I hope that we don't scare you too much!!

But personally I fly QF most of the time and I've been impressed with the service especially over the last 18 months.

Welcome QFCSA.

If you've been following the forums for a while, you'll know by now we can be a colourful and varied bunch. Look forward to hearing you on the forums!

Just by means of introduction,
  • What do you do at QF? (might be a silly question here)
  • How long have you been at QF for? (if I can ask that without being offensive)

Nah, you won't scare me too much.

Also i have been around for a while!
Oh no!
So we've got no secrets.
Glad to have some inside opinions.
A warm welcome to AFF.

1. Just one of those check-in/bag-drop etc. people, so ground staff duties.
2. Haven't been at QF for too long (1-2 years) but was representing JQ for about 2-3 years.

Don't really want to go too much in depth about the personal details, due to 'others' maybe finding out and digging deeper.

QFCSA,

Welcome. Good to have you on board :)

Any insights/ comments you can share to the Airports of the Future initiative?

eg.
1. At SYD will there be a direct security check straight through to the Business/ QP escalators?
2. Will the RFID bag tag still ensure baggage priority, and how?
3. Will you be able to do on-line check-in / mobile check-in, but use the fob at the gate?

Hmm the Airports of the Future. Well this initiative is not being taken well by most of the staff at the moment (they can accept it, but don't like what it could mean in regards to job security and the varity of the jobs).
As the majority will probably already know, nearly all the counters will be taken down for the installation of self-serve, self-tag kiosks and self baggage belt process. Also that the CSA's job is now going to be mainly 'hosting', which will involve helping customers use the quickcheck kiosks, directing and meeting and greeting. The QF spin is "it will be more of a customer service roll, making the transaction time quicker, but with leaving a better impression for customers" as in a more personal 'helping' way.

For SYD i'm not too sure on what they are doing (i'm based in MEL).

As for priority tags, these will be taken away, and the FF T&C's will change following the launch of the Airports of the Future. At the moment i'm not too sure on what will happen with the baggage at the other end, i'm assuming that if the baggage handelers see the RFID tag on the bag they will off load this first, but then i don't think there will be a way for the baggage handelers to differentiate between the bags, let alone the infrastructure to send the bag to a different container.

If it rolls out effectively as they say it will, I like this new system coming online. Looks a lot like NZ's domestic check-in, which is excellent.

Much realised that all the ground staff will be feeling a bit uneasy about it all re: job security. Not sure what can be done about that.

A little concerned as to how the RFID-ready bags will make for an effective prioritised bag system (i.e. the mechanics). Also, something that might not be answerable right now (either because you won't know, or can't tell), but the tags might not disappear completely, otherwise what will happen with international operations (i.e. domestic to international check-in)?

I wonder if oneworld elites (non-QF) get priority baggage service (my gut feeling is 'no')....

Wow, that is quite a change indeed.

Welcome QFSCA, and a question of my own, what about priority tagging for non-status J customers?

If it rolls out effectively as they say it will, I like this new system coming online. Looks a lot like NZ's domestic check-in, which is excellent.

It is quite similar to the NZ dom operations, but from what i've been told there are quite a few differences.
When a pax checks-in at a kiosk it will print off the bag tags, it will also ask if a pax has any excess baggage and will charge AFAIK the pre-purchase discounted rate. When this is done bag tags will print off and they head over to the bag drop area.
Once there they scan their BP, and place their bag on the injector. Once this is done the system will calculate their weight against their allowance and will measure the size of the bag (to make sure it's not over sized).
If all good the bags will be injected automatically, if not it will advise to pay excess and if you have a CC you can pay at the injector.
If bags are heavy, a heavy tag will print off for the person to add on, if they dont add it on bags stay where they are.

The RFID tag can be used for other travellers, even if they RFID tag holder is not travelling (this will be transfered over to any other person on the website) AFAIK.

Much realised that all the ground staff will be feeling a bit uneasy about it all re: job security. Not sure what can be done about that..

There are a few people that will be leaving (mainly the old ones who have been at the company from the TAA days and 20-30+ years)
For the job security there are talks between the union and management for the upcoming EBA that has just recently expired. I think it's just mainly the type of job they will now be doing.

People with international connections will be able to check-in on the kiosks and a bag tag will print out. AFAIK the RFID tags are only for DOM ops at this time.

I wonder if oneworld elites (non-QF) get priority baggage service (my gut feeling is 'no')....

I highly doubt it, unless oneworld makes a policy change and streamlines all baggage allowances and features. FWIW if i see an Emerald with bags i'll throw a Priority or Business tag on.

Welcome QFSCA, and a question of my own, what about priority tagging for non-status J customers?

Unless it gets printed on the bag tag, i highly doubt it.
So the tags will be phased out eventually for DOM travel, still not too sure on INT travel yet. I still think they will stay.

The obvious question

Welcome QFCSA. The first question I thought of when I saw your post was what can you tell us about the science of op-ups?

Given a set of circumstances where op-ups are being given, is there anything we can do to manipulate the odds more in our favour? Things like OLCI or not, check in early vs late etc.
