I received this email yesterday, so presume that a lot of other members (particularly those status matched like me 6 months ago).

Damn it's good - Qantas could learn so much from VA (but I won't hold my breath):

One way to achieve the additional 140 Status Credits required to maintain your membership before your Review Date, is to take 4 return flights between Brisbane and Canberra on a Flexi Fare.

To earn more Status Credits and maintain your membership faster, you could always fly in a higher fare class or internationally through many of our airline partners.

Book a Virgin Australia flight today.

Yours sincerely,

I presume others have received the same thing??

Virgin do it so well, am loving the more client focused approach. So much closer to the client.

Time to book some more VA flights as I mentioned yesterday. Wanted to wait until today, I have never booked flights on a Leap Year before.

Not trying to be a QF fanboy but what is so special about this? I get monthly emails from QF with similar information - without the nagging to fly more.

Nothing received here though.

simongr, we all get the monthly statements from QF and VA, but this email is not matched by QF. My perception is that I found it different and being first to supply it, marks them as being more proactive and client focused...therefore my reality. You may see it differently ;) - viva la difference

I'm finding the VA way is markedly different from the QF way and perhaps after so long (22 years) of the same thig from QF, am enjoying the fresh approach from VA. Whilst I used to be QF-centric, I now firmly have a foot on the VA side of the fence...although this fence sitting will be okay so long as I can re-qualify Gold with both. If not, then it will have been a painful experience :o

Nah, it seems more like a nag for those who took the status match to subtly remind them it's half way through and they may need to get their butts into gear if they want to retain the status.

I doubt those BIS DJ WP/SG who had no match will get the same.

I will have to wait until the end of May to confirm or deny :)

Okay, so I'm 2/3rds of the way to re-qualifying Gold with 100 SC's booked - I'll do it in a canter.

I think the status matching was a stroke of genius by DJ, I only wish it had come a little later when I'd made WP.
What's it has meant that the barriers to me booking DJ over QF when the fares are similar (or even $50 or more for QF) are gone. Not having to queue with the plebs, preferred seating, baggage and lounge access. Everything I hated about flying DJ is gone so I've been flying with them over 50% of the time. I don't reckon I can requalify though so it may be a one-off and back to QF. Not much of a chance to requalify for WP but SG awaits anyway doesn't it?

I fly SYD-TSV a lot and QF have no direct flights - I used to take the stop anyway for the extra SCs but the wait between flights is way too long and in summer the daylight saving bit makes it a long trip home (mentally). At $129 one way with DJ it's hard to go past.

For the inter-capital stuff it's a toss up. Generally will still favour QF if price is close enough.

Oh and I didn't get that email.

I agree that the status matching was very clever....

.... but I'm also not as sure as the OP that the email was that "customer focussed".... I agree that it is more of a "how's your freebies working out for you, don't forget to actually fly with us" message....

I don't think that it is really that different from the quarterly (?) frequent flyer statements that qantas sends out.

I was a matched status boy and pleased to say for Virgin's sake they've got my dollar because of it.... I'm on 230 sc at the halfway mark and have 150 booked in the next two months.... almost maintained my Gold status in 2/3 of a year....

I received the "Member Update" on Friday. The thing VA/DJ has done well with me is make me feel positive towards them. I'll polish of plat retention by March 22nd thanks to a return codeshare with Etihad to Europe. If I was cynical I would probably say "If you'd checked Mr Gunter you would see that I have more than enough travel booked to retain platinum status", however the ineptitude of QF's customer service means they get my cynicism and not VA/DJ.

I suspect I probably would not have tried DJ/VA out without the match, I think it was a smart move.

Match has worked well, I will shortly requal Gold and with 6 months to go should easily do Plat as well. And that's in a year where I plan to hit P1 with QF ;)

I got the same letter, but I've only got to get 60 SC by Sept, largely thanks to a J trip to Perth in the double status period.

Greg.
