Flying EK - should I collect miles on QF or join Skywards?

I am a QF WP flying EK next month from BKK to DXB and back in J/D class. This is my first time flying EK despite more than a decade of averaging 200k miles a year.


I am looking for advice on the best way to collect miles for this flight. I know that I can collect miles on QF flying EK but at a discount. Should I collect on QF or join Skywards?

Here are some facts to help with the answer.
1 I am not an EK FF member but can join
2 it is possible that I will fly EK again as I need to go to Europe twice a year and the Emeriates once every two years. I also go to Sydnrey a lot though typically on QF
3 I use my QF points regularly. I am not a horder of miles. Rather i routinely use points to go back to Oz


So what is the best use of my miles - adding a discounted number of miles to QF or starting of an EK account ?

If I was in that your situation I would stick with QFF, since your main use of points appears to be BKK-Oz-BKK which EK cannot do for you, coupled with the fact that if you fly J on EK, status doesn't matter so much.

But join Skywards anyway. You might find you have 'enough' QFF points for the year, then you may as well try to get some status on EK and redeemable points for some excursion ex DXB.

I find skywards is a great program if you are flying in premium cabins.

Look at where your future flying will be. If it's mainly AU then perhaps QF is the best options, however if you join Skywards and hit EK Gold/Plat you can still fly QF and get benefits.
I'd be looking at where most of your flying will be over the coming years and not just this one trip.

Another factor that may be of interest is that Skywards Miles expire approx 3 years after earning date (3 years at the end of your birthday month), so if you are only earning a few, the ability to burn them (efficiently) needs to be considered.
