Just came across this. Air Asia is showing Istanbul & Barcelona as destinations on their online route map. It appears that a flight would operate KUL-IST-BCN as a tag flight. These flights don't appear to be bookable, however.

So - is this a sign of a new route, or just a mistake with their route map?

Let the speculation begin !

Although If D7 actually start a service to BCN, I suspect they would stand a better chance of success than flying into other European ports with the high operating costs associated with flying into the likes of LGW or ORY which they previously flew into. BCN would be an appealing destination to market their product towards , yet BCN should provide a relative cost effective port for long-haul LCC to fly into one would think?

My other school of thought is, if D7 do re-enter Europe for a second attempt , it will be interesting to see how other LCC's such as TZ or JQ react.

A Wait and see approach to identify if D7 are successful or accelerate any of their own plans, particularly the case of TZ who have made some noise recently on their ambitions to fly into Europe in the near future.

Interesting there is talk around at the moment of Scoot starting services to Europe, and IST & BCN are two of the cities that are being speculated about (along with ATH & FCO). AirAsia has beaten them to the punch.

IST is probably a good choice, as MH have recently pulled out of IST, and there is probably good chance of snaring IST originating traffic as well as Asia originating traffic .... although there has been talk of reduced demand to Turkey with the various issues the country is facing.

I must have missed this! Could a moderator please remove the question mark from the thread title?

I must admit that I was a bit surprised by IST. It's traditionally a strong market, but I hear demand to IST has plummeted over the past few weeks. Hopefully that's only temporary.

Turkey being a Muslim country probably makes it a good choice? my last visit to KL a few years ago the airport was dominated by a whole host of Muslim carriers including Yemenia and the like... lots of tourists as well enjoying the 'nightlife'!

I'm certainly interested.

Also didn't realise I could fly to Tehran from KL. I've heard there is good skiing around there.

I think we saw an Iran Air plane in KL during the KL/SIN lounge run.

Well it looks like Air Asia's flights to Europe are no longer going ahead. :(
