THE jobs of 1460 Qantas maintenance workers will be put under review today as the airline announces hundreds of cuts in other areas of its business.

In a blow to Victoria's crisis-ridden manufacturing sector, the future of 400 workers at its heavy-maintenance base at Tullamarine and 660 workers at its Avalon operation will be examined, along with another 400 jobs in Brisbane.
Qantas also will announce hundreds of staff cuts in other areas including flight and back-office roles as it scraps unprofitable routes. Victorian Premier Ted Baillieu now faces extreme pressure to save the Qantas maintenance base at Avalon, following Alcoa's review of its Point Henry plant, with Geelong's economy to be devastated if both shut.

There has been a lot of speculation about this and now that the unions can not strike AJ has an opportunity to do what he wants how he wants. Let us all hope that QAN does not now become RIPQAN.

I hope I am wrong on the check in staff front BTW, we have a few who contribute to this community in such a way that they are shining lights for QF when it comes to customer orientation, and they are very much true brand ambassadors compared to some of the more official channels in other social/formal media, who seem to be bound by one eyed policies/rules. Such good people on the frontline should be the last to go IMHO, good staff need to be cherished.

Globalization in a decade is very hurtful to jobs. There is no protection to either business or employees in this world market place. Melbourne is a prime example of a city that will get battered in 2012. At least they have a great social calendar for tourism!

Agree there 100%. As the article mentioned, if there are cuts it'll be from middle management etc where I am sure there is plenty of fat.

Well the engineers losing thier jobs - blame your union and thier carry on. Their actions in the past couple of years and obviously last year were going to cost them in the long run.

Real people and real jobs are falling off a cliff this year. 2012 is going to be very tough for a lot of people. It's not a time to lay blame now but more a time to help people get their lives back in order if the axe falls on anyone you know.

I can see that Qantas could possibly become a wholesale travel agent.

Qantas will probably only fly to app 6 or 8 overseas locations and from there they will use codeshare partners.

Effective cutting there fuel bill and all other costs along the way.

No more Mumbai-SIN or AKL-LAX operations, removal of 747 from domestic ops and also replacing it on the BKK run, however 747 back on LAX-JFK run and also to Japan.

Also deferred 737-800 deliveries (due to supplier delays???).

So true.And the strong Aussie dollar is not helping.Even I know 3 30 somethings that have lost their jobs in the last 6 weeks.
And of course up here in Mackay the CFMEU is holding a week long strike at BHP mines because they want more.Will be interesting to see when China has the inevitable slow down what the Unions thoughts will be.
