Well having pontificated about Emirates (EK), and how good Royal Brunei (RBA) is. I flew EK on a A380, because that is all that my father in law will fly with (he is gold, looking at Plat). I booked Mel to Istanbul, in Economy, thinking that I would use my points. No problem Dubai to Istanbul, getting the upgrade. But Mel to Dubai no go over the phone or web. So come the day and come the hour, I asked at the counter, no problem, one seat left in Business. Lounge was brilliant, service was great, but full, not a seat to be had. Once on board and seated the plane was delayed 15 minutes, then 1/2 an hour, then 3/4 hours. Then there was a message over the tannoy, there was technical problems. At this very moment up come the cabin manager to me. Kneeling next to me he explains, that one of the 1st class passenger IVOD isn't working, and regrettably I am going to have to go to Economy (after what I had said on AFF, about EK, this was sweet justice). OK no problem, so off he went, and after some minutes the assistant cabin manager returned, to collect me and take me down to economy. I was not angry, but turned on the disappointed child look, polite, but not happy Jan.
Now down in economy, there was no room for my backpack or sports jacket (A very expensive one too),I was served Champagne, given the J menu, and all before the plane took off. The look on the economy passengers was priceless (who is the person, and is he the reason we are late leaving). The very soon after takeoff, along comes Marita, who introduces herself to me as MY flight Attendant (I'm 58, beautiful women , don't have to do much to have me melting). Long black hair that was like silk, a lovely smile, and the most wonderful accent. If I can do anything for you just tell me (her words). By now I am the centre of attention in the area around me, and Marita returns, would I like to sleep in the jump seats. Yes, thank you, the seat have been made in to a bed. Complete with mattress, dounna, and full size pillow. Soon I was fast a sleep and after 3 hours I was woken, by Marita. Now to wake up to this vision of beauty, and loveliness, was truly ike a dream. The first class passenger had returned to his first class seat, and the business class seat was emtry, would I like to go back to business class. My reply was, yes please, and thank you. Once up the backstairs, I never made it past the bar, scotch and coke was the order of the Day or was it Night, or morning, well it was scotch and coke, after scotch and coke. Everything after this was an anticlimax.
Now the questions are:
  1. Will I fly with EK again?
  2. Will I fly in Economy??
  3. Is the A380 the best plane in the world???
  4. Are Spanish woman sexy????

The answer is
  1. Yes
  2. NO never
  3. Yes
  4. What do you think, next holiday is Andalusia.

That's an interesting story. I get that they were trying their best to serve you and their obviously very premium F passenger, but with all the seat swapping I'm not sure why you and the passenger in F simply didn't just swap seats. If he wants IFE so much it's working in J, if he wasn't a suite without IFE, it's in F.

Regardless of the great service after that, I would not have been amused.

I would have thought they fairer thing to do would be to offer you his F seat without the IFE working?

Yes sounds ridiculous the way they handled it. If IFE meant so much to the F passenger he should have just swapped seats with you rather than bumping you down to Y.

I'm with the previous posters, F with no IFE would have done me fine.

My first suggestion to the cabin manager would have been that I would take the F seat without IFE - would have been happy to swap with the F passenger. I always have plenty of entertainment on my MBA / iPad.

If they swapped him permanently they might have to give some sort of refund?
As it is it seems they just gave him an IFE area and his suite which was paid for was still available. (Hence no refund?)

OP did they refund you anything on the upgrade costs?

EK was trying to stop any refunds or bad press.

They seem to do it well.

Got all the points back, and 20,000 more for my toubles. As to me going to F, I asked later, but was told that it was a safety issue????? Don't ask me, I have no idea why it was a safety issue.

F seat would have been preferable. As for safety issue, sounds like an EK bull story so they didn't have to give it to you.

The apparent 'fireworks" between you & silk haired Marita could have perhaps been an issue of concern..

My Holiday to Andalusia, is booked. But not throught Emirates, they were too expensive.
Arrrr Andalusia in June, summer heat, can't wait.

I have just found this thread and it is very interesting however a little confusing...

Are you saying that you paid for the upgrade using points and then on the flight they downgraded you because another passengers AVOD didn't work. I am not familiar with the rules but once they accept your points as payment then surely they are contractually obliged to let you stay where you are. What would have happened if you refused to move? I am certainly naive when it comes to rules like this but I am pretty sure that if I paid for an upgrade whether it was with Points, cash or bitcoins I would have told the FA to find somebody else. The chances are there would have been other PAX using points for upgrade as well. Why did they pick on you. Because you where the last one to get an upgrade? I would have stood my ground. Until the air marshal kick me out... :)
