Hi team,

I have been reading the collective TR’s for the past few months since I discovered this thread, and drooling at the awesome times everyone is having. As part of the sharing experience I thought it might be time that I contribute one myself...

Each Euro-summer I head to Europe for as long as I think I can get away with it with work. I base myself in my favourite little city of Tallinn and travel to different parts of Europe from there. I have been doing this for close to 10 years now and looking back, my trips from 2007 to this year are a bit of a contrast. When I first found myself heading to Europe, I wanted to see it all and raced around doing too much, spending too much time travelling and not enough just relaxing with friends. These days I tend to enjoy a more relaxed pace with not as much time on the road.

My trip this year sees me in Europe for 5 weeks with only a couple of sidetrips outside of Estonia. I am heading to Salzburg for four nights and later in the trip to Odessa for another four nights. I have been to Salzburg before, but this year I am spending most of my time outside Salzburg in the countryside and mountains. The rest of the time I will be in and around Estonia.

I am flying QF J BNE - SIN and AY J SIN - HEL. No QF International J Lounge at the moment in BNE and no AY 350XWB on this route yet.

Ozmatt,
I like your map and the sound of your trip. Would you please post details of the map as I have a big trip coming and would love to display it in this format?

The first time I visited Europe a lot of those areas were part of the USSR and off limits to Australians.

Looking forward to your TR

Tallinn, is a beautiful city and certainly makes sense to make it a base to see the rest of Europe from there.

I took the return ferry from Helsinki to Tallinn back in the summer of 2009 as a day trip, although I wished I stayed at least a night in Tallinn.
The Cobbled-streets and market-like square, was very appealing.

Now that Estonia has the Euro as its currency, have prices spiked up or remained relatively unchanged?

One thing I really like about BNE airport is the ability to prefill your Departure Card before you even get to the airport. The benches were chockers with people filling out departure cards but I was the only one I saw use the kiosks. Scan the QR code on your phone, sign the card and you are finished. Great idea.

As mentioned, there is no QF lounge at the moment with it under renovation. People are being shunted to the Plaza Premium lounge in the meantime. It is tiny, so I don't think everyone will squeeze in. It is functional, wifi is strong, food looks okay and the champagne is good enough. There doesn't seem to be any children around. Not sure if that is due to school being back, families not liking the small footprint, or the front desk...

Prices have definitely gone up since those heady days at the peak of the global recession. In saying that though, it is still a cheap European travel destination and your AUD will go a lot further than a lot of other parts of Europe. I put some price guides in the restaurant thread here which should give you a bit of an idea of value.

Wonderful timing. In 10 days time we are heading off on our next trip and will have 2 days in Tallinn.I just came back to AFF to find your Tallinn guide on restaurants, saw your TR and there is the link.Wonderful.
We have had a day in Odessa.Wonderful old buildings but many showing quite a bit of decay.Certainly enjoyed it.

Looking forward to your report. We loved our trip to the Baltics-we were inspired by a friend who lives near us, she is now in her 80's and was born in Estonia. She ended up in the US as a result of the war & has some amazing stories.

This should be interesting - looking forward to reading the trip report!

QF does seem to get a bit of stick but I have to say my BNE - SIN flight was fantastic. Seating of 1-2-1 and sitting in 6A. Window seat with direct aisle access. Pick of the food was the crab pancake entree (pictured below). Service from the all male crew could not be faulted.

Having flown BNE-SIN-HEL quite a few times now I have the whole process down pat. The first QF leg is for watching movies and TV and staying awake. The second longer AY leg is for sleeping to get into sync with Euro time.

Flying AY business gained me entry to the QF Singapore Lounge. Once the SIN-BNE flight cleared, there were only a handful of people in the lounge. It is a small world when you run into a friend in the lounge flying the reverse route to me and get to have a catchup and some vino :)

One small tip is to not watch the latest movies on QF. AY does not have an extensive range of movies so it is better to save the latest movies for watching on AY if needed. As it turned out I didn't even watch a movie on AY. I was tired and managed to sleep most of the way.

AY is replacing its old Airbus 340 fleet with new Airbus 350s. The SIN route is still running the 340s until October. They are a tired fitout and are very dated. Sitting up front the seat went completely flat and was a reasonably comfortable sleep.

Helsinki is a one of my favourite cities in Europe. I have spent quite a lot of time there over the years and have had the good fortune to have locals show me around. This year I am not currently planning to head back to Helsinki so thought I would at least spend a morning here between flights from Helsinki to Tallinn.

Arriving into HEL at 0615 there is a 0730 flight or a later 1345 flight. This year I booked the later flight freeing up my morning to see friends.

With luggage checked through to TLL, as soon as I cleared immigration I was off to try the new airport train connection to get to town. As I was planning to use trams and buses in town, the best ticket option was a 1-day pass for 12 Euros. The train station is shiny new and efficient and takes just short of half an hour to arrive at Helsinki central.

Having just completed two long inter-continental flights my first priority was a shower to freshen up. This gave me the opportunity to head to a funky new sauna complex called Loyly

It was truly a magnificent way to spent the morning. Sauna, swimming in the sea, warming in the sun - and repeat. Only the public 'shared gender' sauna was open so swimwear was required. In Finland, it pays to ask...

The Finns have the highest coffee consumption in the World, but it is not the coffee us Aussie coffee snobs know and love. Over the years it has been really hard to find good coffee in Helsinki. Not far from the sauna complex on the way back into central Helsinki I think I have found a hidden gem. Kaffa Roastery - good coffee, free wifi and trams out the front.

I actually caught up with a good mate here for a coffee before we then heading back to central Helsinki to catch up with another friend for a quick beer.

Getting back to the airport with the new airport train is a breeze with trains every 20mins or so during the day. The flight on a little ATR72 turbo-prop from HEL - TLL is only 25mins :) You literally take off, hit cruising altitude then start the descent. They used to hand out a chocolate for the 'meal service' but times must be tough as they no longer appear to do this.

Fly off to Europe in a bit over a week, first week in Spain/Portugal, second week driving around parts of central Europe and third week in the Baltic States, so this TR should be interesting...

As always happens my arrival in Tallinn has disappeared in a flurry of restaurants and social engagements. The highlight though has been the weekend over on the islands of Muhu and Saaremaa. A small posse of friends and I left Tallinn on Friday to drive to Virtsu and catch the ferry to Muhu.

DSC_0370.jpgDSC_0376.jpg

The journey takes all of 30 minutes and once we arrived on Muhu we were met by staff of our manor house in a Tesla and a van. Not having been in a Tesla before - I was not going to miss a seat in there...

New post following with more pics...

We planned to stay here at Padaste Manor for one night on our way to the Opera Festival. My words and pictures won't do it justice, suffice to say the accommodation, food and service was impeccable.

Of course the main purpose of this little roadtrip was to head to the Saaremaa Opera Festival so after an amazing breakfast, sorry no photos, we hit the road again to drive to Saaremaa island. There is a small causeway between the islands and it is about an hours drive.

We stayed in a very central location called Arensburg only a short 5 minute walk to the Opera. Our afternoon consisted of more eating and drinking and an afternoon in the spa. When I say 'spa', it is not simply a 'spa' in the Australian use of the word, but saunas, swimming pool and a jacuzzi.

I had heard of this Opera Festival from different friends for the past couple of years so I was very excited to finally be here. Each year they invite a different European Opera and this year it was the Wroclaw Opera and Symphony Orchestra. The Saturday night was the gala with all the Estonian beautiful people. The performance was fantastic and I have already marked next year into my calendar :) The opera is staged in huge temporary structure next to Kuressaare castle.

Photos in next post...

Post opera we ended up at yet another restaurant for a late dinner followed by clubbing until 4am! I am getting way too old for that but we had an amazing time :) Some more pictures around Kuressaare below.
