I’m a VA WP on a trip to HKG, SIN and the USA, flying with VA, VS, SQ and DL so thought it might be interesting to compare the various products. I’m also flying a mix of Y and J, mostly cash fares but one redemption.

Flight 1: VA1531 HBA-SYD, whY

Standard good flight with VA. Excellent friendly crew who obviously enjoy their work. I’m flying this leg with a non-status colleague and was able to have her allocated 3B next to me at check-in. Sorry to the (presumably) WP in 3C who subsequently did not have a shadow that they otherwise would have had!

Wishin’ and a hopin’ for the day we get a VA lounge in Hobart. Seems a long time away. About 2 years ago JB came to Hobart to tell us we were getting one….hmmmm…..

The pilot came out of the coughpit to do his welcome where we could see him before we departed. I’d seen this on VX before but this was the first time I’ve seen it on VA. I like it.

Easy, smooth bus transfer to the international terminal in Sydney.

Lounge 1: Koru Lounge, Sydney International

After resisting the delights of duty free we settled into the Koru Lounge. I know this lounge gets a bad rap occasionally but I like it. I’ve used this lounge flying GF, UA and now VS but never NZ! There are a few flights (AC, VA, NZ, VS) pending but plenty of room and you can’t beat the views to the tarmac. The seating is a bit weather-beaten. Pizza is especially delicious.

Another AFF thread talks about lounge wear etiquette. Well today we have a chap in jeans and a QF pajama top! Wearing a pajama top is bad enough but a QF one?

And here she is.

Flight 2: VS201 SYD-HKH, whY

Based on other comments on AFF, I’d been hoping for an upgrade. The flight is not full. But two things were mitigating against it, I thought. One is that the ticket was super cheap. I bought it on Best Flights and think there was a mistake when it was available – HBA-HKG for $400 one way! I snapped it up when I saw it. But I suspect VS will be more likely to reward the full fares. The other thing is that I got the BP in HBA so if the CI staff at SYD were allocating upgrades, I would miss out. My last hope was the magic ping at the gate. But no such luck.

Priority boarding worked well, and I was able to take my colleague through with me.

On advice of Seat Guru, I chose 61K as it was reported to have a few extra inches pitch. On arriving at the seat I thought there was no difference from other seats. But after settling in, I looked over to the middle seats and realised that I did have some extra pitch. My expectations were a little too high I think! I did start getting sore thighs as the flight went on and I was glad I wasn’t going all the way to LHR in that seat! On deplaning I noticed that the bulkhead seats, on the sides, had oodles of room, and they had signs on them which I think said you could buy on the plane (you can also buy them in advance). However they are next to the toilets and I recall that for most of the flight I saw people standing there at row 51, so perhaps not so beneficial.

The amenities kit: shades, earplugs, socks and turkey basters….oh wait, toothbrush and pen. I always think it’s a great idea to put a pen in the kit but it would be better if it actually works!

I’d not flown long-haul economy for a few years so it was a bit of a test after many J flights. All in all I thought it was a pretty good whY product. Food was fine and plentiful, staff were efficiently friendly – influenced I thought by the predominant Asian staff. And I love little Virgin touches like handing out Love Hearts lollies before descent. Food and drinks service was not greatly co-ordinated but that’s Y I guess. The only odd thing to report was that the white wine bottle was unlabelled and had ice in it! I didn’t think alcohol could freeze so I suspiciously assumed it had been watered down. It tasted OK though, but nothing special as you would expect.

Apart from lounge access and PB there were no other particular status benefits. The bag was tagged priority in HBA and was on the belt by the time I arrived at the carousel.

All in all a good whY option for a daytime flight to HKG.

Yes, I am a fan of including a (working) pen in amenity kits - saves having to hunt in my bag for one to fill out customs and immigration forms handed out on-board
 
Perhaps you didn't get an upgrade because you were "underdressed"?
 
Thanks for the report, and the pics. Confirms I will never travel economy on VS !

ps wine will freeze (or go to slush) - for instance if you put a bottle in the freezer at home for a quick chill and forget to take it out until the next morning :oops: I can't think of any reason why an airline should need to put its wine anywhere near freezing.
 
Hotel 1: Panda Hotel, Tsuen Wan

The hotel has been arranged by our host. My work in Hong Kong is in the New Territories and the hotel is central to the locations I’ll be visiting. So not on the island or in Kowloon. Its right in the middle of a residential towers. We’ve been upgraded to the Executive floor. The hotel is a very good standard, breakfast in the executive lounge is very good. The room is not overly large but fine for business. I’m out all day and evening so won’t be able to sample the lounge for coughtails…but the views of the northern mountains are spectacular.

Lounge 2: Kris Flyer HKG
Flight 3: SQ865 HKG-SIN

Flying economy on a VA points redemption. No wait at the SQ J check in, bag tagged priority. Through Immigration and into the lounge for an hour or so. Quite a good size with plenty of seats. Reasonable selection of food with Chinese and western options. Only issue I had was that the toilets are back outside the lounge. Surprising for such a lounge with a high volume of flights through the day.

Smooth PB and onto the plane. I flew SQ whY years ago in one of my early European jaunts so apart from a regional J flight a few years back this would be a new experience. Plus, it will be only my second A380 flight after I was surprised a couple of years ago to be put on a 10-day old QF A380 in J, replacing the expected 747.

And what a step up in class from VS. I’ve selected Upper deck where there’s a small Y cabin after the long rows of J, so I was a bit envious walking through to the back. The leg room appears to be better than VS. I’ve chosen an aisle and although the cabin is 95% full no-one is sitting in the window seat. So either I’ve been given a shadow, or having the aisle booked encouraged other singles to select windows elsewhere, or its just plain luck. Either way I’m delighted and move across to the window when the doors close. I’d forgotten how comparatively quiet the A380 is, as we take off.

What can you say about SQ staff that hasn’t already been said. Nothing is too much bother, they anticipate your needs, and all with a genuine smile. And this is Y. J and F must be heaven.

Going to the toilet I notice the row 80 seats with masses of legroom. I’d not had access to them so presumably they are offered to SQ and maybe *A elites. The centre bank of 4 seemed to have 2 shadows.

The food service was impeccable with presentation streets ahead of VS. And they had labelled wine (with no ice!) that was served with the meal…after the pre-dinner Singapore Sling of course!

I got to the carousel before the bag did, and although priority baggage did not quite work, it wasn’t a long wait. Boy have AU airports got a lot to learn from HKG and SIN.

Another great option for daytime flights. It would be worth transiting SIN if flying elsewhere for the premium Y service.

Hotel 2: Crowne Plaza Changi

Arriving at 11pm and leaving at 6am 31 hours later, I decided on staying at the airport and travel into town by metro for my meetings. The entrance to the hotel is at the arrivals hall at T2 where my SQ flight gates, so couldn’t be easier.

The room is enormous with an interesting window between the bathroom and bed. Loads of room in the bathroom with a bath and large shower. However, in my room (401) I can hear the planes taking off so earplugs are essential for sleeping. The window covers the entire wall and if there is double glazing it’s not working.

The sink water didn’t get hot enough but no issues in the shower.

I didn't use the restaurant but had pastries and coffee in the cafe and room service, both good.

A pretty good standard for an airport hotel.

Lounge 3: Skyview Lounge T1 SIN.
Flight 4: DL622 SIN-NRT, J

I’m flying with DL to NRT and on to JFK. I’m departing from T1 at 6am and the Skytrain is closed at 4am so it’s a shuttle bus from T2. I’m the last one squeezed on, standing in the stairwell. A bit out of kilter with the gleaming T2 experience, but 5mins later I’m first off at T1.

Smooth J check in, albeit with the requisite additional security for US flights. The Lounge is a shared one and pretty basic. It’s a 6am departure and there is a hot breakfast on offer. I stick to just coffee as I don’t have much of an appetite at 4.30am.

This flight is on a 777 and has the herringbone layout in J. I really like this seat and layout, especially when flying alone, as it provides a good level of privacy, aisle access and window views.

It’s a funny start to the flight when the recorded announcement talks about the availability of wifi in the air, but when finished, the CSM announces that wifi is not available on this flight so “don’t ask the FA why your device cannot connect”. Soon after, the CSM comes to take my lunch order, but I’d not yet been given a menu. Here we go, I thought, typical poor US FA service (especially after the SQ service). But actually I came to enjoy the FA service, realising they were pretty casual but in quite a friendly way.

Is this the most comprehensive amenities kit in the sky? Socks and eye mask, toothbrush, paste and floss, comb, pen, moisturiser and lip balm, tissues, hand wipe, ear plugs, shoe shine and shoe horn. Plus there’s slippers!

The AVOD is excellent with instant response to control.

The meals were OK for J but nothing special. They are served in one go, with the foil removed from the hot dish before it’s placed down. A bit like getting a meal in whY but on a larger tray!

Lounge 4: Delta Sky Lounge NRT.
Flight 5: DL172 NRT-JFK, J

It’s a pretty quick connection at NRT, which is the Asian hub for DL. I count 10 DL planes at gates. Just enough time to visit the lounge to use the loo, so can’t really comment. However it’s a great location overlooking the gates and seems quite new and fresh.

This flight is a 747 and I’m thrilled to use the new seat layout. It’s still herringbone but with the seats facing the windows instead of the aisle. It’s so private it’s like having your own suite. I’m in my favourite spot of the nose, where F is on some airlines.

There’s plenty of room, Westin branded duvet and 2 pillows – large and small. The AVOD screen is the largest I’ve seen in J, and possibly F.

The CSM tells me the crew on the earlier flight are regional crew whereas this crew are JFK based. And they are a step up in class.

The meals were excellent, with each course served separately.

This DL seat is excellent, really comfortable and when I lay it out for bed it is so comfortable that it doesn’t need a mattress (which DL don’t have anyway).

This is a really good J product. Frankly I cannot fault it. I’m an advocate for NZ’s J service but this really matches it. The only caveat I put on this is that the 747 layout is superior to the 777 layout.

I'm doing a similar trip in reverse on VA & SQ with domestic US flights mostly on VX & DL. Interesting to see another point of view.
 
Hotel 3: Hilton Garden Inn Times Square

As a Hilton Diamond I looked around for the best price and location in Manhattan. I intend to be seeing a lot of theatre so close to Times Square made sense.

The Garden Inn is an average good standard. The rooms have recently been refurbished and the bed is very comfortable. The room is a reasonable size but the bathroom small.

They work hard at recognising Diamond status: I got an advance email asking my preferences, a welcome card, and a phone call on the first night checking that all was OK. Diamonds have a choice of free breakfast or 750 points per night. I chose the breakfast which is served in the restaurant next door. It’s OK, with a choice of buffet or cooked to order, but nothing special and the coffee is – well – American! So it’s off to Starbucks during the morning for a latte. The breakfast option is convenient but with so many eateries in the area there’s probably something to be said for taking the points and having breakfast elsewhere.

But I can’t fault the location and the price and would stay here again, if the two Hiltons nearby are too costly.

Lounges 5 and 6: Delta Sky Lounge LGA: Terminals D and C. Then snow cancels my flight!

I went to OLCI last night and although my VA number is registered it is requesting payment for a checked bag. The website seems to indicate that DL has matched my elite status and DL elites don’t pay for checked luggage. So I held off OLCI and decided to see what happens at the desk.

It has started snowing as I leave the hotel. There’s a big storm coming to match the freeze from a couple of weeks ago. I suspect its light snow but its settling and the traffic is heavy. My flight has been cancelled and I’ve been rescheduled for 90 minutes later. I’m flying into the bad weather which is already occurring in Pittsburgh.

I’m departing TD at LGA. No wait at the elite check in and I don’t get charged for the luggage, so that was good thinking not to OLCI.

I’m a little confused about priority security. I can see a sign in the distance for Sky Priority but its sitting next to a TSA Pre-check sign. The queue at standard security is not long so I decide to join that. As usual I get to go through the big scanner – I always seem to be selected for this, as well as the explosives check at AU airports! I don’t think I look that dodgy!

Arriving at the Sky Lounge the Angel, on noting my WP card, assumes correctly that I’m not a regular and helpfully explains where everything is, about the wifi, and where my gate is and how long to allow to get there. The lounge is a good size and only about 20% full. There’s snacks and some basic breakfast options and a coffee machine thankfully. The bar is staffed but it’s a bit early for me! The only downside is that it overlooks the roads and carpark so no plane spotting is possible.

Snow is getting heavier and before long I notice a queue forming at the help desk. The Lounge Angel announces that all flights after 2pm have been cancelled, and this may be brought earlier. About 80% of the flights on the board have the dreaded red writing. But my flight is showing delayed to 1.39pm. I keep watching the Board with fingers crossed. I realise that the gate has changed to TC so I decide to do some lounge hopping and check out the other lounge. Walking between terminals I see airside and its pretty stark, with everything white except the proud DL tail fins emblazoned in red and blue.

The lounge at TC overlooks airside – yay! – but is about half the size. Seating is not a problem with all the flights cancelled. But TC has double the gates of TD, so I bet this lounge gets crowded on normal days.

Those jets that are still flying are getting the de-icing treatment. It reminds me of a sci-fi movie with long spindly arms and nozzles like ray guns at their tip. But you can see how effective they are as all the ground under the plane is now clear of snow.

And sadly the dreaded red word has appeared next to my flight. I’m rebooked for tomorrow. DL don’t provide accommodation assistance for weather delays. So I’m madly trying to find a hotel near the airport (all gone), and decide to flaunt my Diamond status and go to the first Hilton property that I can get for a reasonable price. I’ve got a room at the Hilton Fashion District.

Next problem: Get my bag back, and get back into Manhattan. I transferred from TD to TC airside, and forgot this when I went downstairs to collect my bag. It wasn’t at TC and I had to go to TD, and that is via that open air walkway covered in snow with snow still falling! So I try to to go back through security to use the airside walkway but that is not allowed. I line up in the taxi queue deciding that I’ll have it take me to TD and then on to the hotel. There’s not many taxis arriving but the queue is small, but it’s still stressful wondering if the taxis will stop running.

Stick with me, there’s still DL stuff to report….

Eventually I get a taxi, who takes me to TD and is happy to wait, with the meter running of course. I can’t see my bag so head for the office where the bloke makes a call, then tells me that he’d need to go looking for it amongst all the bags and it might take up to an hour, and it will automatically go to PIT tomorrow, and do I really need it? Well, yes, I need clothes and toiletries. So he offers an amenities kit and I decide that I can’t rely on keeping the taxi waiting for an unknown amount of time, I want to get to the hotel before weather gets worse, so I take the kit and head back to the taxi.

In the amenties kit is: toothbrush and paste, razor and cream, deodorant, comb, cotton balsa and sticks, 2 floss sticks, an apology note and a Skyteam t-shirt. What I really need are Skyteam socks and undies!

So we’ll see tomorrow if the bag does actually make it to PIT, I’ll have to be pro-active at check in to have them track it but of course I won’t really know until I’m at the PIT carousel.
