Rambling Around NW Tasmania.

Over the last 9 years I have been working in NW Tasmania-Burnie and Latrobe.All up I have spent nearly 3 years working here.I love the place.I am a self appointed ambassador for the North West.So here in no particular order is a pictorial of the last 12 months.First during August I had my sister visit so the first few posts will be of that visit.
The first day we lunched at Hellyers-a whisky distiller but a good lunch restaurant.Simple but tasty food.A beef and a scallop pie.

Not a bad view.The properties here are well looked after with a great floral variety no matter what time of year.As anywhere in Tassie you are liable to come across something different.That day was Highland cattle.

Tasmanians are good at growing South African natives.After this little drive we went to Ferny Glade.A nice picnic spot.Peaceful in winter.

Looking forward to seeing these pics. I grew up in Penguin and Burnie, but don't get back there much anymore unfortunately. Have good (summer picnics, the odd bit of romance) and bad (PE runs in the pouring rain in winter) memories of Fern Glade!!

However you go to Ferny Grove to see this little fellow.We were able to follow him up the creek for about 20 minutes though on the opposite bank.

Indeed but Tassieplatypi are not always shy.One place I used to go to one got to know me and would swim over to have a look whenever I went.

Love those views towards Stanley. When I lived in Tassie (a 1950s kid), we had some holidays at Boat Harbour, in little cabins just behind the beach. Beautiful spot.

Back to the rambling.This will be in no particular order.First is the Burnie foreshore behind the football oval and the Makers tourist bureau.

Mostly rubbish though here with lots of rabbits.But still nice views including up to my office here-

Now to one of my favourite walks-the Inglis river walk.You can start from the fish and chips shop at Wynyard wharf though I usually start from the Table Cape Bridge.From there about a 7km walk up one bank of the river to the Bass Highway then back down the other bank.Magnificent trees,water views and usually some wildflowers.Often seeing different birds and wildlife.

More wildflowers in spring and you also pass several houses on the south bank of the river with some nice gardens-

Just up from the bridge is the cemetery.I often have a stroll around cemetaries.Lots of stories-

But some sad faces.Why are these children buried in a separate corner?

.

Country cemeteries in particular seem to have a children's area and I know my grandmother's first baby who died only a few hours after birth is buried in an unmarked grave in an area with other stillborn and neo-natal babies which now (only recently) has a fence, garden and plaques.

After you cross the Table Cape Bridge from Wynyard turn right for a detour to Fossil Bluff.One of the many geologists dreams in the North West.

Wynyard.Just walk up the south bank of the Inglis River from Table Cape road.Or drive if you must.

Well another TR will be coming soon but the prelude will be that Sydney tradition-the Easter Show.Then on to Bangkok and 4 weeks in Japan for Cherry Blossom time.
The reason for this little interlude is that having worked in Tasmania on and off for 8 years this may well be my last time so I am recording things that have made me really look forward to my stints here.So now another of my favourite places and walks-The Warrawee reserve just outside Latrobe.On this occasion I parked at the gates and walked the Shale trail to the picnic area and then back beside the Mersey River.
The shale trail goes uphill at first and for a way follows the old tramway that transported the shale to the retorts to produce oil-the shale revolution is an old story.

And that is the reservoir which also was Latrobe's water supply.The dam was dug by hand and fully lined with local bluestone-

You then spend a little time on a fire trail.Unfortunately on weekends it is frequented by trail bikes-
