Greetings fellow AFFers.

After reading many TRs on AFF including Boomy’s excellent TR about his recent trip to Germany I have been inspired to type with my two typing fingers again. For those that need to know
NOWAK = NO Wives And Kids
It’s an annual boys trip I have undertaken to meet up with some very good friends from the UK at GVA and spend a week in the wonderful surroundings of the French Alps in late Jan.

As with all things AFF it has been a learning curve over the previous few years. In NOWAK 1 I thought all my Christmases had come at once when I purchased a SQ Star Alliance J redemption MEL-SIN-MUC-GVA return for 190K kris points. In NOWAK 2 I tasted suites on one leg…bad(read great) move. So booking time for NOWAK 3 arrives and for some unknown reason J seats seem rare (I will confess I’m booking this in Sept ’14 for a trip 4 months later). However, F is wide open. So this year my routing will be

MEL-SIN SQ 228 77W F
SIN-MUC SQ 328 77W F
MUC-GVA LH 23 J (euro J)
Snow time
GVA-LHR LX J (euro J)
LHR-SIN SQ 321 A380 R
SIN-MEL SQ 237 777 F

The total points burn was 265000 Kris points booked as a *A F redemption. If anyone wants to know the taxes I can look them up for you. They were alittle high due to leaving Europe from LHR.

My journey begins in Melbourne on the Friday before Australia Day weekend. Due to work constraints, I am self employed-no work no pay, I plan to work until 12.30pm and then train/bus it to MEL. Originally I was to take the train to Broadmeadows then the 501 service to MEL but due to time I opted for the more direct train/skybus service from Southern Cross station. Ok it costs a few dollars more but to arrive at the airport in 1 hour from home was pretty good considering a car trip takes about 45 mins and not far off the same cost once you factor in the tolls and parking. The lack of chauffer transport by SQ to me is probably there biggest hole in what is otherwise an excellent service.

MEL check in was quite unusual this trip. Normally you approach the J or F check-in and boarding passes are issued with the usual SQ exchange of pleasantries. Today ,however, I encountered my first check in dragon. I’d read on AFF that they do exist but I had never encountered one. At this point I must explain I travel carryon baggage only (I just don’t like to loose my ski boots to some NFI baggage handler), which for a ski trip pushes it a little. Ski boots, Sorels, gortex suit, helmet etc etc.So the dragon goes “I need to weigh your carryon baggage” . It ended up with a little bit of a Mexican stand off. I got both bags down to less than 10kg but she almost got me to wear the Sorels in the process.
Check-in out the way I breezed thru passport ( 3 people in the hall!). TRS for the GoPro Mrs UXB had purchased for our wedding anniversary (no queue), and up to the Flounge. I must say the SQ Flounge leaves a little to be desired, I think it’s the lack of natural light.

I boarded, as is my liking , first on the plane and ordered some Dom.

Now normally I am a Krug man but Mrs UXB on her pre xmas jaunt to London loved the Dom and said I needed to give it a second try. I did…..then moved back to the Krug.

Sq first on 77W seats 8 in 2 rows of 1-2-1 and I was in 1A just because it looks good on the boarding pass. The seats are very similar to J, the J cabin behind is also 8 seats in 1-2-1 arrangement, probably just a bit more room in F and of course 26” TV. The 77W have a wide foot bench/ottoman under which you store your carryon which when you only have 1 carryon leaves plenty of foot space, with 2 carry-ons it’s a different matter. There’s also no overhead storage which does make to cabin feel huge but is a PITA if you need the extra storage like I did. However, a quiet word with the green dragon who was obviously looking after me for the trip and my extra carry-on was stored in the foot well of 1D the only vacant seat.

Tune in for the next episode SQ F food and wine and TPR

Cheers Danger UXB

Danger you were on 77W - and as you say no OH bins which indeed is a PITA - 773 (older and refitted) has same F product in slightly larger cabin and does indeed have OH bins - much better IMHO.

SQ line as to why no OH bins is because pax would rather have the HL closer to them - bah humbug - clearly they sampled the wrong F pax for this feedback.

MEL to SIN and Transit

I changed into my Givenchy pjs, I am a big pj fan on long haul, you get off the plane with “fresh” clothes on and no airplane smell, perfect. The personal amenity kits were handed out

IMG_0658.jpgIMG_0659.jpg

, now another SQ mini gripe. The old Sothies kits were cough but atleast they had a face moisturizer in. These new Feragamo kits, lovely fragrance but hand cream, I mean please, it’s your face that dries out on a plane not you hands. Nothing in the bathrooms either. I had been forwarned about this omission so I was carrying my own mini tube of Lab series. Ok gripe over.
In typical SQ efficiency the post take off drinks order was taken, more krug, and on delivery it arrived with beautifully warmed cashews….in a bowl.

I do enjoy my food and wine in flight so spent a while with the menu

IMG_0527.jpgIMG_0528.jpg

Deciding on the caviar with perfectly chilled vodka

IMG_0537.jpg

Crab and chicken soup, which was served at space shuttle reentry temperature, accompanied by the Kooyong Chardonnay

IMG_0539.jpg

Then the beef red curry.

IMG_0543.jpg

Now normally I am not a beef person on a plane but, well I’m English and curry is the national dish, there is more take away tikka butter masala served than fish and chips in the UK. The curry was particularly good with plenty of chilli as is my liking the only downer was they were not carring any Penfolds RWT which I was looking forward to tasting as it was a new addition to the wine list. Instead I opted for the Saint-Estephe which I must say was really quite lovely.

Love the Kooyong Chardonnays - will need to keep my eye out for them

Post meal and feeling rather full I declined the dessert and instead settled for a mug of Japanese green tea. I new I needed to sleep alittle on this segment to make my jet lag more manageable in Europe, so I requested my bed to be made up. The load was 7/8 so there was no spare seat to request as a sleeper whilst I kept my original seat for dining and movies.

I think I must have dosed /slept for couple of hours because when I awoke there was a little over 2 hours til touch down. I had my bed returned to a seat , grabed the Bose QC15’s

IMG_0556.jpg

and tackled the IFE. From the outset it was petty obvious the IFE was having a bad day. The request to have it reset was meet with multiple apologies and in the 10 mins it took to reboot my light snack order was taken- beef again ,

IMG_0526.jpg IMG_0545.jpg

this time accompanied by the Burgundy, a truely delightful drop for those pinot fans like myself.
I settled in the watch The One Hundred Foot Journey, a movie about an Indian restaurant opening in a little French village opposite a Michelin stared restaurant, delightful movie if you ever get the chance.

My Changi transit was fairly short but enough time to retrieve the Changi dollar vouchers then use them to purchase some Highland Park for the skiing hip flask. A quick glass of VLGD in the TPR and a shower to freshen up.

I'll cover more of the TPR food on the return trip.

Next up SIN to MUC and the best inflight meal I've ever had

SIN-MUC SQ 328 77W F

The MUC flight left from B10 which is a reasonable hike from the TPR but I got there with plenty of time to spare. Once again it was a 77W this time I swapped to 1F (using Cruiser Elites theory it is easier for right handed Krug consumption). The load was only 3/8 so my extra carryon went into 1D which I requested to be made up as my bed for sleeping , retaining 1F as my eating/IFE seat.

I had snuck a look at the menu over on SQTalk before I left so I knew what it delights I was install for

IMG_0550.jpg

Seared tuna

IMG_0562.jpg

I skipped the soup and went straight to what I was looking forward to, the Kurobuta pork and a glass of red Burgundy.

IMG_0564.jpg

My step father was a pig farmer and used to rave about Berkshire pork. Kurobuta pork is a special genetic strain of Berkshire pork reared slowly. It has a particularly porky flavour and is very tender if cooked well. I was not disappointed with this meal, despite the number of curries I have eaten on SQ all of which I have loved this was easily the best meal I have eaten on a plane by a country mile. The crew were delighted with my enthusiasm for the dish.

I finished with the pancake and the green tea again.

IMG_0566.jpg

Interesting little note in with the cutlery!

IMG_0568.jpg

Settled in to watch some mindless IFE before eventually succumbing to fatigue and going to sleep.

I woke about 3am European time with about 2 hours to go and had a light breakfast of cereal.

MUC-GVA LH J (euro J)

MUC as always was the perfect stopover. Smallish airport, Lufthansa lounge has great shower facilities with a toilet in the shower room (SQ please note)

IMG_0579.jpgIMG_0578.jpg

, and a simple selection of breakfast cereals and Lufthansa lollies.

IMG_0580.jpg

I’m doing the low GI breakfast thing today as I’m in for about 25 Km of skiing when we hit the snow.

Next up the skiing

The MUC-GVA leg was on Lufthansa Cityline. Part of the reason for selecting MUC as my stop over, as well as arrival time at GVA, is the fact that over the past 12 months or so Lufthansa pilots have been calling snap strikes which have been causing chaos across Europe. Lufthansa Cityline have been immune to these strikes so I knew my arrival into GVA would be unaffected.

Euro J is really nothing to write home about, it’s basically an ecomony seat with the seat next door left vacant,

IMG_0582.jpg

however, this flight gets me to GVA about 30 mins before my friends arrive from LTN on slEazy Jet and from LHR on BA.

Came across this Allianz Area replica (home to the all conquering Bayern Munich) on the way to the gate

subscribing! i'm currently writing on my trip from last month on SQ F - nice to see some comparisons.

what camera/lens did you use for the fisheye of the seat?
