Greetings to all fellow FF'ers,

Having read many a trip report over the past few years I thought it only fair for me to contribute back to those like me who voyeuristically enjoy reading and seeing the adventures of others, and what better way to do this than via this trip - taking advantage of a great fare that I don’t think is widely known or used - the Circle Pacific – the fare that takes you between Asia, the US and the Pacific - at a considerable discount.

Before the trip gets started, I’ll share my thoughts on the routing pain of the fare via OW - and what I am looking forward to - and not, and I’ll see how that compares to reality as the trip progresses!

The Flying
I ultimately have 4 destinations, however given the routing (13 legs) you'd be correct in thinking I'm taking the long way! The base fare is a DCIR26 - that's the One World Circle Pacific 26k Mile fare, and ex-KUL its priced at MYR 23,824 (A$8,400, US$6,700) - which is probably half the cost of the individual flights - noting however ex-SYD is 30% higher to A$11,099. Whilst both Star Alliance and One World offer the fare, given I am QF WP it’s an easy choice - however this brings with it the routing pain. You see OW has very poor coverage in Seattle - one of my destinations, which makes things a real pain.

Austin: The first pain point however is my need to get from Kuala Lumpur to Austin, for dinner - which seems innocuous enough, however far from it. Getting to the US from Asia Eastbound generally lands you stateside late evening (once you get to AUS/Central), and the only option that works is via Narita. Not a problem I thought! Unfortunately the DCIRxx fare, like other RTW’s, use discounted fare buckets, and getting a D fare KUL/NRT was impossible - as it turns out the day I am traveling is a peak holiday return day in Japan, so wait listed (then confirmed) to HKG, then to NRT, to catch the NRT-DFW flight. That means 4 flights and 31 hours to get to AUS, Awesome.

Seattle: Getting into SEA isn’t too painful – a short hop to DFW then direct to SEA. OW coverage is poor, and whilst most OW carriers have codeshare agreements with AS, you can’t book the AS fares on the RTW's - so that leaves me connecting via PHX to get to LAX to get on the QF flight to SYD. I can’t recall ever enjoying domestic US travel - on the plus side it'll all be in F. Domestic US F though which is IMHO worse that Australian Domestic J.

Sydney: Last time I flew QF12 I upgraded to F and enjoyed the degustation menu option and I had hoped to do the same this time - however it wasn’t to be! QF's A380 routes have been modified in the past week to substitute 747's given a recent mishap with a maintenance jack, so no F on this flight! On the plus side it’s the refurbished 747 with the same J seats - and I still love the 747 more so than the 380, so it’s not all bad! Actually a little Awesome.

Auckland: Booked separately to the circle fare given I'd be over my 26k mile limit - so its Y for a quick dash over the Tasman, nothing too special here. No awesomeness here.

The Hotels

Gone are the days of my HH Diamond, back to Gold I am. Austin is at a Homewood suite and Seattle is the Hilton – both of which will be a bed and not much more. I love the W in Seattle however moving away from SPG to HH some time back, the HH Status keeps me loyal. In Sydney (my original home) I normally end up at the Quest North Ryde, given I rent a car and its quite central for me – many people loath this hotel – I actually like it – its, functional. Auckland I’ve booked into the Hilton on the waterfront – don’t recall being there before, and it looks nice – so that’ll round out the trip for me well.

Expectations

There isn’t too much exciting or new in this trip, in fact I have flown a lot of it before. Having said that, this will be my first time through NRT and first time on US Airways.

CX KUL/HKG is via their new regional product on the A333 - it’s a short flight and it looks like a nice product to start the journey with - especially given its downhill for a while after this! I'll likely use the small CX lounge in KUL given I always use the MH F lounge - however from memory it’s pretty poor.

CX HKG/NRT is a prelude to the poor flights to come I think, this is on their non-upgraded B773 - if I can pass out pre-take off and wake up as the wheels touch the ground I’ll be a happy camper. Looking forward to seeing the upgraded The Wing lounge in HKG though as it’s been a while since I last was in HKG.

AA NRT/DFW I think this will be the worst on this trip - even versus domestic US flights. It’s an old B772 and I last flew one of these ex-CDG, needless to say the food scraps between the seat cushions and the grumpy AA service on that flight left me wondering how AA survive. On the plus side a first visit to NRT will be an interesting change.

Domestic US Flights are never fun, however it will be interesting to compare AA to US, having never flown US before. I often read reports of people enjoying the lounges in the US - I think we are spoilt in Australia/Asia, specifically with the QF F lounges in SYD/MEL. Nothing to look forward to here.

Not expecting anything good or bad from the rest of the trip either, however a couple of visits to the SYD QF F lounge will be enjoyable as always.

So you’ve made it this far – what can you expect from my trip report over the coming 16 days you ask?

Well, I’ll be taking photos of lounges, planes, meals and hotels – don’t expect any sight-seeing photos – this is not that kind of holiday blog report!

I’ll rate each part with an awesomeness rating, because – well, that’s just what I do.

And for my own amusement I’ll be adding a +/- weight where possible (scales permitting) – you see traveling has a very bad habit of putting extra weight into my stomach, it’s all that damn food and beverage that kills me – so as a motivator to eat more responsibility – I’ll be tracking the inevitable excess baggage along the way!

Look forward to hearing the report, between my partner and I we've done a few of these either ex-MEL or ex-SIN, always a good way of getting more bang for the buck, so to speak.

Whilst both Star Alliance and One World offer the fare, given I am QF WP it’s an easy choice - however this brings with it the routing pain. You see OW has very poor coverage in Seattle - one of my destinations, which makes things a real pain.

Well despite routing pain of OW, you made the right choice - or indeed the only choice (regardless of status with OW), as the star alliance product is vastly inferior. It only allows travel to the west coast (no Austin), and also has surcharges on several carriers - the most significant being on SQ when using their 77W/A380 product in J/F.

In and out unfortunately - lunch straight off the 31 hour flight.. Then dinner, then lunch, then flying again. Not sure of the destinations for any of it though - maybe i'll get lunch and end up there!

And we're off! A short dash from home to the office, then the local taxi to the airport. Credit must go to the taxi driver for being able to multitask his two phones, ongoing text messaging and phones calls, and remembering not to hit anything on the road. Always fun driving the A45 to the office, and given today was the last time for a few weeks, I made sure I enjoyed the open spaces in traffic.

WP_20150505_09_23_22_Pro.jpg

KLIA Being my regular airport feels like home as far as setting out goes, its not too bad an airport all things considered, I feel credit should go where its due.

WP_20150505_16_13_46_Pro.jpg

Checking in felt like the flight was empty, and bags were tagged through to AUS which although expected, isn’t always offered up front.

Last time i came into the country i registered for the Foreigner eGate program, and this time i used it exiting the country. A quick passport scan, double index finger print and photo, and through i go. Not sure how many people have used it since launch however it doesn’t look like many people have registered! Given how efficient immigration is its probably not too much quicker than the counter, the upside however being no stamp in the passport, meaning no constant passport renewal due to lack of space!

WP_20150505_16_37_32_Pro.jpg

I noticed that the lounge invitation invited me to the CX F Lounge, and for a brief moment I wondered if they had renovated in KL. Not to be, the lounge was the same as I remember from a few years ago, a tasteful, small regional lounge that offers little that could be considered appealing. I notice some airlines are moving towards the trend of filling you up in the lounge with good fresh food, and encouraging you to skip the in-flight meal – not CX that’s for sure!

WP_20150505_16_39_37_Pro.jpgWP_20150505_16_40_38_Pro.jpg

Verdict – If you’re flying ex-KUL and OW then head to the MH lounge – it’s not perfect, but the selection is better, there’s full facilities and its in the same area. In fairness I couldn’t expect much awesomeness from a regional lounge, however in the interest of uniform scoring I’ll give this a six, boosted by the super-efficient airport facilities.

I booked myself into the quieter section of the plane, as J has a smaller section in front of PE. Only two of us here, and feels like a private jet, I did notice however the main J cabin was mostly full. Doors close 3 minutes early and we’re taxing out for wheels up 4 minutes after our scheduled departure. Today we have Tim and Steve in the flight deck, a reassuring (rightly or wrongly) best of British accent with Doris as the CSM. Flight time today is 3 hours and 27 minutes.

WP_20150505_17_18_17_Pro.jpg
I don’t recall sitting in this exact seat before, however it’s the usual CX herringbone – new regional version I believe. Although its new, for some reason it feels a little dated – maybe it’s the choice of colours and materials used. In any case, its private, comfortable (if not a little hard), and spacious. The tray table barely fits my Surface though, which seems a little odd – given the room I’d have thought a larger table would be in order.
WP_20150505_17_21_16_Pro.jpg
The menus are given, and I’ve decided to start off this trip well – I’m opting for the soup – surely the healthiest option? And a Coke Zero – such a wonder we have this available in Asia now!

20 Minutes after take-off and we have the first drink service, with warm cashews – served in a dish – take that Korean Airlines! CSM Doris is over to introduce herself and welcome me back to CX, the usual J and/or OWE treatment – always feels a little weird after a few thankyou’s she’s on her way.
WP_20150505_18_13_51_Pro.jpg
Meal comes quickly and starts well, I am left thinking this could possibly be the best J food I’ve had based on the start. The Tom Yam comes however and it tastes like a packet of instant noodle, albeit with fresh prawns and vegetables. On the plus side they haven’t dumbed down the spice, so it packs a bit of a punch. I am impressed by the attention to detail I must say. Presentation is exceptional, there is even a rubber cutlery holder which is an interesting touch. Keeping with the healthy options its fruit for desert instead of cheese and/or ice-cream
WP_20150505_18_27_46_Pro.jpgWP_20150505_18_41_01_Pro.jpg
Now the meal is done, I start to think about timing and the trip ahead. Its now 6am CST, and I’ve got about 29 hours till I reach Austin. I have a bunch of presentations and other work to finish, so I’ll need a good few hours for that, along with a chunk of sleep that gets me driving a rental car at lunchtime on the opposite side of the road with the presence of mind to get me to the hotel and first meeting with some level of clarity! Decision made - a movie and relaxation is in order for this leg, sleep can wait J

Verdict –I figure I only have myself to blame for ordering the healthy option, and im sure the other options would have been better! Regardless, I still think its one of the best food services I’ve seen around Asia, including to A/NZ. The seat and aircraft in general is also great for a regional product, and sure does beat others especially on this route. I’m going to give this a 7.5 out of 10 for Awesomeness, it’s a little awesome when thinking about the regional aspect of the service, with the extra ½ a point for a) the food presentation and b) we flew what appeared to be into a full moon, which was a beautiful sight.

Great reading, thanks for the ideas. Quick question, and sorry to interrupt your trip. Which site did you book the Circle trip on? When I go to the One world site I cannot find a booking page, unlike the Round the World itineraries. The One World page seems to direct me to the individual airline sites.

I have never been able to find anywhere online to book a circle fare - maybe the ruleset is too great to code in the logic? *A have one, just not OW. Can book through any carrier or TA though, very straight forward - just give them the fare code and routing and IMO its back within a few hours with taxes calculated etc.

Re: TR: Awesome OW Circle Pacifc KUL/HKG/NRT/DFW/AUS/DFW/SEA/PHX/LAX/SYD/AKL/SYD/SIN/

thanks for that, just on the phone to qantas. Cathay on line did give me a quote, but it was all back through HK which i am not keen on. i will take your advice and finalise with qantas once i have the itinerary settled. Thanks again for the great tip, i have to be in New York in Sept ex Sydney, this will enable me to extend the holiday beyond the straight SYD-JFK return for not much added cost.

It was a bit of a hike to the Wing, in retrospect i probably should have used the Cabin. Either way, i made it down towards Gate 1 and upstairs to The Wing. Maybe i have lived in Malaysia for too long, however there felt like an air of arrogance over the place (people), smiling at other PAX when walking around is met with a look of disdain! Overall its a nice lounge - i couldnt call it anything overly special though - it doesnt have the same feel as the SYD QF F which i prefer. I broke my cardinal rule of not drinking whilst flying and popped out the champagne - will no doubt regret that later!

View attachment 47956(Intentionally blurred..) View attachment 47957View attachment 47958

One of my preferred things to do whilst in lounges is to use the shower - Not only does it refresh you but it doesnt involve eating or drinking, and kills some time! The shower facilities here are the best ive seen ever - and they were immaculate, cleaned very well after each use. Had to wait 15 minutes and there were 6 people in front of me.

View attachment 47959View attachment 47960

The flight itself was unremarkable, as expected the plane was pretty tired and for lack of a better word, sh*ty. I noticed 90 minutes prior to departure EF has a blocked seat next to me - didnt think it would hold out as there were only two seats free, but it did - which was nice. Wonder if thats some kind of Platinum shadow?

Pilot Rico (NZ Accent i think) and CSM Vanessa. Vanessa did the presumably OWE meet and greet - although didnt see her do it to anyone else.

My aim was to maximum sleep, so after the menu came out, i was out - waking mid descent. Only 2.5hrs sleep though, which will prove painful in the hours ahead no doubt.

Verdict - If you can avoid the Cathay B773 - do so at all costs! Its ok for short daytime flights i guess, otherwise its pretty coughpy. Awesomeness non existent.

Having never been to NRT before, I had visions of it being like a SIN, HKG or even KUL. Arriving just before 6am I bounded off the plane to the transit area, which had about a 10 minute queue, then up to the main departures area. As luck would seem to have it, the transit area came out right near the JL F lounge, however unfortunately it wasn’t open till 7.30. No problems I thought, lets walk around and find a lounge that’s open – this is a busy transit airport after all! As I started to walk to the far most area towards Terminal 4, it quickly became apparent that this was not a bustling transit airport, in fact I would appear I was the only person in sight – including staff! Reaching the far most point of one side of the terminal, walking past everything that’s closed, I figure I may still be able to find something on the other side – surely? A slower walk back as the realisation that I have to kill an hour and a half kicks in, past the AA Admirals club (not open either..) and to the far most point at the other end of the terminal. By this stage it is apparent that I’ll be waiting until 730, so I head back to the main area, find a chair and sit, and wait. Plus points for making me exercise J

At 7.29 I’m up and walking the short distance to the lounge – there is a sign saying they are still preparing for 730, however the lady sees me (and maybe how tired I look) and asked me to go in – first guest of the day! Finally in the lounge! As the lounge starts to pick up, I head over to the sushi bar, although in fairness I am probably not that hungry – it seems blasphemous to not at least try it though. A nice small plate of salmon and prawn sushi, nothing to phone home about. Given I was at Nobu last weekend in KL, its probably not a fare comparison or expectation that the JL lounge would be great – I did expect better though. 10am finally rolls around and off to the AA gate I go – I quick reprint of my boarding pass onto AA Stock (I thought I had an OP UP to F, alas it wasn’t to be) and I’m onto the already mostly boarded plane.

From memory I said this wasn’t a leg I was looking forward to – pretty accurate in hindsight.

The plane is old, and tired. The crew also seem old, and tired. On the plus side the seat does recline to an angled flat, albeit with a big lump in the middle. Despite only have two hours sleep and struggling to stay awake, I decide to use this as the opportunity to kill future jetlag, so I stay awake to have the meal I pre-ordered, hoping to get a good 8 hours sleep on the back end, following Central Time. Well I probably should have just slept or watched a movie. I wonder if serving Japanese food on a plane is like trying to serve steak? I’d also be curious to know what Japanese people thing of the food, maybe its just my tastebuds. In any case, there was an entre box and main box, two pieces of sashimi coated in what tasted like thousand island dressing and a generally uninspiring assortment of tastes. The fish for the main wasn’t horrendous, it just wasn’t great – the Miso seemed to lack.. Miso flavour.
WP_20150506_06_32_05_Pro.jpgWP_20150505_22_36_21_Pro.jpgWP_20150505_22_22_36_Pro.jpgWP_20150505_20_30_18_Pro.jpg
The plane from memory was an hour delayed to get in the air, so after the meal service had finished there was about 9 hours to DFW – so off to bed I go. The seat actually isn’t all that bad, its not ideal, but for an old product, I’m sure in its day it was considered good.

3 hours to landing and I’m awake, feeling surprisingly refreshed – I suspect it’s a placebo – I’ll come back down to earth later in Austin no doubt, probably while on the I35. Given the first meal experience, I thought I’d skip the breakfast service – fruit or quiche, and instead order the Soba. I don’t normally like Soba on a good day, despite my wife loving it, so I figure no matter how bad it is, it’s not going to be a big disappointment! To my surprise it was actually not too bad. I had pictured the broth being warm, it was cold, but all in all – I’ll give this one a thumbs up.

Onto some work as the breakfast service is underway and the sun comes up, ready to power through the long day ahead.

Verdict – If you have the choice of transit locations in Asia, don’t choose Narita. In fact if you have to choose Narita, just be sure not to get there before 730am! As far as AA goes, well its fair to say that my expectations were low – and its equally fair to say that my expectations were met. I hope once they refurbish everything things get better, they do have a good network. The soba and my ability to sleep gets a an extra half a point, so we’re 4.5/10 for this leg. American Airlines takes the A out of Awesomeness.

For the first time coming into the US i used the automated immigration gates, which surprisingly were seamless, efficient and had me through all procedures within 10 minutes of deplaning. Baggage was quick, first bag off, baggage re-drop was fine, and even the TSA re-entry was not too painful - in fact they were better than MEL International (one of my least liked security/customs points). Into the admirals club for a quick 30 minute stop, which is more than enough - Australians sure are spoilt for domestic lounges, it always surprises me when people complain about the QF lounges in the scheme of things.'

Given there are no boarding calls, i head to the plane just as Priority boarded has finished and Main cabin has started - not a massive queue though. Onto the plane and my seat, 3F, is taken. I politely ask the older Texan gentleman if he is in my seat, to which he replies with a simple "Yes". After a short pause, I say "Alrighty then..." and sit in his allocated 3E. No big deal, rude, but not a problem. Departure time comes and I overhear the FA's talking about moving seat 3E - i wonder if i am moved, what i will say to the guy who took my seat! In any case, the AA first responder spends 20 minutes putting a new spring into the jump seat and we're off without the need to re-seat me or the Texan :)

Into Austin and to the rental car place - im surprisingly awake and ready to drive, or so i thought. Into the car, and my phone is nearly dead, has no reception and the downloaded Here Maps i have cant find the hotel i am entering! After 15 minutes of sitting in the car fiddling around, i decide to bite the bullet, get an Avis GPS and be on my way. For some reason it cant find my hotel either, and the power keep cutting out! No worries, i'll figure it out on the way i think. A mile down the road and i have no idea where i am going, so pull over, get the damn GPS power secure and back on my way - still cant find the hotel, but i've put the intersection in. Once i get to the intersection i still cant see any Homewood Suites, so i pull over and power up the laptop - 7% charge - cough! Lucky i am able to bring up my reservation and confirm, that dumbass driving the car isnt staying at the Homewood Suits, its the Hampton Inn, hence the bloody confusion on the maps. In any case, a quick u-turn and a few minutes later i'm checked in and ready to rest.

WP_20150507_08_50_44_Pro.jpgWP_20150507_08_50_10_Pro.jpg

Nothing too special about Homewood Suites as you'd expect, older looking room, a bed, somewhere to sleep - its all good. I notice there is a yellow post-it note above the bed, with a hand written message - ""Duvet covers & sheets are clean for your arrival". Not sure what to think of it, should i be happy that they are telling me the sheets are clean? If there was no post it note, should i worry? In any case, a few hours nap before heading off to the W for dinner @ Trace. A nice entre of scallops, venison tatar and bread followed by beef short ribs. Ready for a proper sleep!

After waking at 1, 3, 5 and finally 7 I'm up and ready for a day of meetings and afternoon flight. Breakfast is edible and generally good - there's bacon, and my wife would be pleased to know that i had juice, yoghurt and a bagel and no Bacon. Small sacrifices!

Verdict: Expect nothing on AA Domestic and never be disappointed, especially when you're flying a plane thats so damn old! 2/10 with awesomeness points awarded for me reaching the hotel in one piece, without be arrested for reckless driving.

Austin ended with a nice lunch at Jack Allens Round Rock – decent local produce, however the belt is already feeling tighter! Woken up by an alert from Cortana telling me there were flash floods and tornado's in the area – which meant it might be a painful trip to Seattle! The AUS-DFW leg was fine, the plane wasn’t too old and generally the usual domestic disappointment – it was the older AA seat. Upon check-in the lady let me know that there would be no meal service DFW/SEA, given the flight was after 9pm – which I thought was a little weird for an F flight, yet Domestic US – not unexpected. A quick paid $10 sandwich in the Admirals Club and we’re ready for the leg to Seattle. Ominously I hear one of the gates announce they are boarding early to beat the storms coming in, and my gate is quite – low and behold my a few minutes later we’re in a holding pattern – no 9pm boarding!

Midnight finally comes around and we’re cleared to take off - looking forward to getting into Seattle at 3 something in the morning! The plane is young – a year old, yet the F seats only recline what feels like 15 degrees, within their clam fixed shell. What a disappointment that the new AA fleet has such poor F seating.

Whilst in Seattle I am staying at two hotels – the Hilton on 6[SUP]th[/SUP] and the Sheraton a block down. The Hilton is a real disappointment, and I would have been better off staying at the Doubletree down the road I think. I generally find Hiltons are great overseas, and pretty coughpy in the US.

The Sheraton on the other hand is what I would normally expect from a hotel – nothing too special, however nice and comfortable.

Having been out over the weekend to a few restaurants and bars, and ending up at the Columbia Tower club one night, although there are no scales in the hotel rooms still – I am now convinced that I am +3-5kg – awesome! On the plus side, the view is amazing, who'd have thought the space needle would look so small!
