Hi all, I’ve just returned from Perth and was fortunate enough for a points upgrade to J on QF’s new J suite, and I returned to Sydney in VA’s J suite in one of their refurbished A330-200s.

As usual, I’ve put together two videos, and I’ve also commented below on certain aspect of the two services. I’m happy to answer specific questions if they arise.

The lounge: QF’s domestic J lounge in Sydney is fine, although starting to show its age. VA’s Perth lounge is all new and very spacious and quiet when I was there. Both had similar amounts of food/drink with baristas available to prepare proper coffees. VA's showers were much nicer and newer, although QF seemed to have more power points available around the comfy chairs (VA have these benches with power points, but the chairs didn't look all that comfy).

Boarding: both controlled the priority boarding fairly well (which I understand is the norm for VA, less so for QF)

The suite: My seat on QF was a ‘window seat’ so it was more private than VAs, but you couldn’t get access to the aisle when your tray table was being used (unlike with the VA one were you can sneak out when it's still covered with dinner). Both suites felt flimsy though, VA’s more so, which was shaking loudly whilst taking off. The tray table, in particular, felt brittle. Neither felt as solid as those old Skybed mk2 workhorses and I worry how these two suites will feel in 5 years! Both QF and VA suites have ample bench space although, as my camera found out on the QF flight, things tend to slide off easily. QF have a bit of a ledge behind a plastic thing (I can’t described it so check out my video and see where I stored my laptop J ) which will hold things in place. The colour combinations are quite different with VA going for the youthful white and purple while QF have gone for the classier wood/metal look. I like both, but the old-man in side of me probably prefers QF’s wood.
The actual seat: both are wide and comfy, and of course, fold flat. QF’s was more adjustable and came with adjustable lumbar support and a massage feature (which didn’t feel like it did much to me). QF’s option of the semi-reclined position on takeoff/landing is nice too. QF’s seat was a soft leather while VA’s was a coarse cloth. As you flatten the QF seat, it moves down forward towards the IFE screen (which makes it easy to use) although it would be quite compact if you were on the larger side of things, so I suspect larger people might prefer VA’s more open layout.
IFE: QF’s is good, VA’s is not. There was minimal content in VA’s so I had to entertain myself in other ways (watching an amazing sunset, for example). Both are touch screen and in the QF suite, if you flatten it, it moves down towards the screen so you end up closer to it thus able to easily use the touch screen. The QF screen was possible clearer too, although this could have been due to the file quality. Otherwise, both screens were well positioned and large.
FAs: both were probably a mixed bunch, some were friendlier than others. On QF I was referred to by name on several occasions, but not so on VA (unsure why when I recalled them using names of other pax next to me and they had the pax list in front of them). I did notice that the VA staff were asking everyone if they’d used the new suite before which I thought was a nice touch as, to an untrained eye, it could have been very confusing with most things hidden from sight. Food service was prompt and wine was filled on multiple occasions so over-all I was happy.
Food/drink: see what you think in my videos. The service was prompt and the meal portions good. The food and utensils were probably slightly better presented in the VA flight. The wine was topped up as frequently as you’d expect.
The flight: both were comfortable and on time. In fact, the VA flight arrived in SYD ahead of schedule so my run to the train station was a lot less stressful than I was expecting.

Over-all, both were a pleasant experience although I probably prefer the Qantas offering with the IFE being a major factor (it’s almost 5hours from SYD to PER). Both suites seemed brittle, though, so I fear what they’ll be like in 5 or so years!

Great videos and review. What movie/TV show were watching on that VA flight?

Sorry I realised after that I forgot to record any footage of the VA IFE. I usually show a brief summary of the TV and movie options.
I watched Maze Runner and The Middle, IIRC. The wine was flowing liberally. :)

Thanks PaulST.. great videos again :)
You were lucky (planned well) to get QF's suite... last time I came back (to MEL) from Perth on the A330 I got the old, old, old configuration... no sky bed... seat in front goes back.. happy feeling gone :(
And of course another *very important* point to consider is that VA has champagne :)

True VA did have a welcoming champagne! Having said that, it wasn't quite as nice as the Dom I'd had the night before hand (EK F) :)
There was always a risk I could get an old interior but I did choose this flight with the hope of an upgrade to the new suite. I would have been very disappointed if I'd got the old 2-2-2 configuration.

Great side-by-side; exactly what we (who haven't done the trip, and have a choice) needed! Based purely on your report, I'd go with Qantas.

On another tack - aren't we lucky to have these choices in Oz - I haven't done coast-to-coast in the USA for ages, but I can't imagine business - or even First - would be better on AA, United etc.

Absolutely! Having just returned from the US late last year (where I flew in AA, AS and VX F), I can safely say that we get it good here in Australia. Having said that, F flying in the US is a lot cheaper!!

We know you love QF "Rooflyer" ;)
But the risk with QF is that you can get a bad J cabin experience like I had. VA has suites or flat/sky beds.. no risk of a bad seat back experiences in an A330 coast to coast with VA.
I also favour VA (first) domesticly in the US.. not as good as the AU experience but the best of all the ones I've flown.. Delta and AA.. haven't flown United.

You mean VX (Virgin America)? I found them to be one of the better domestic Fs.

It's true that QF aren't a safe choice yet as I believe that 50% of their A332 fleet still has 2-2-2 configurations?

Great Trip Report PaulST and love the YouTube videos you put together.
Highly Informative commentary and like others have already alluded to its great to see such a strong product being offered by both our domestic carriers which leaves other international carriers to shame.

PS - Was that VA flight the charter flight organised by the WA scouts or did more scouts and their leaders get to fly on a different flight ?

Thanks. Yep it was the Scouts flight - VA5000. :)

Awesome, supporting a great not-for-profit organisation at the same time!

Some lucky scout leaders made it up the pointy end too I see !

Looks good, I've traveled on both and they are both fantastic. Lounge is much of a much-ness however, if you have access to the J lounge in Perth, which you would flying business it's far superior than VA's new lounge.

I think the seats/suite wise they are equal. QF has way better IFE. I personally thought the meals were better on VA and wine was sort of equal. FA's good on both.

If I absolutely had to choose a winner I guess I'd pick VA by a whisker, but they are both fantastic!

Was I in the VA J lounge at PER? Don't tell me I filmed the wrong lounge!! I'm sure I saw business written somewhere.

Indeed you were Paul! VA have a combined lounge rather than the separate Qantas Club lounge and Qantas J lounge in Perth. VA's lounges are generally better than QC but where QF have a J lounge then that is far better than Virgin lounge.

Ah phew. I've been known to film the wrong lounge in other videos. haha :)

Rather than start a new thread, I thought I would add my comments to those that have been made here.

I've just flown BNE PER return in J to Perth with QF and back with VA.

I thought QF had a better selection of food in its lounge (BNE) but was a bit tired compared to the new VA lounge in PER - to be expected I guess. VA's lounge was very spacious but essentially the identical food and beverage layout of its other lounges.

I'm not great on detail and onboard both seats were very similar. VA was cloth covered which made it seem a bit softer that the QF leather. Also the VA window seats were against the window, whereas QF seemed to alternate seating and storage positions so seats weren't directly behind each other. That meant some seats were against the window and others effectively about 1/2 a seat away.

I thought VAs IFE had more selection than QF with the QF a tad easier to operate. Both had large screens. The lack of movie selection on QF was surprising and disappointing.

FAs on VA were a clear winner. Both airlines were professional but VA seemed to go the extra mile to make sure you were comfortable and keep the drinks topped up - more personable I guess. The food on VA I thought was superior but QF was a breakfast flight and VA lunch. The QF breakfast I selected turned out to be an oily roast beef toasted sandwich - the menu made it sound better. The wines (Cab Sav) were similar.

Priority boarding, VA policed it loudly and actively, whereas QF basically allowed a free for all after announcing boarding for priority passengers.

Overall I enjoyed my experience with VA more than Qantas, but I would fly either again in a heartbeat. :)

Really? I thought VA's IFE was cough, unless I was missing stuff? Admittedly I rarely fly with them so I was unfamiliar with it, but I'm a young male so am reasonably tech-savvy.
I thought that QF's seats felt softer, but VAs were also quite good.

I certainly agree re: priority boarding. I was looking back at my video and I'm not actually sure which lane I was in! I may have actually made it up!!??

Edit: oh, and did you find VA's table a bit cheap and brittle? It didn't have the solid feel of QFs swing-out table.
