re: USDM & AA account balances to convert from March 28th

earlier today - I filed it unread but I'll have a look ...

re: USDM & AA account balances to convert from March 28th

Haven't received mine yet, but if so that means everyone has about one month left to make any US DM redemptions... (assumed, of course, that after this point, AAdvantage redemption rules - presumed not to change - will take over)

re: USDM & AA account balances to convert from March 28th

So if it all becomes the same rates as AAdvantage what are the actual advantages? The rates look like going up across the board. Is the only benefit a stopover each sector (2 in a return trip) with open jaw as well? With the flexibility to mix and match cabins on Departure/Return legs?

AAdvantage does not allow en route stopovers.

Since AAdvantage allows one way awards (exactly half that of a round trip), making open jaws (single or double) is easy.

Generally speaking, AAdvantage routing rules are more restrictive than US Dividend Miles. Flying between two non-adjacent regions in AA can only be done via a given set of regions, which is not defined on AA's website (but has been documented on other FF websites). A major one of note is that flying between South West Pacific and Europe can only be achieved via some select Asian ports (Singapore, Bangkok, Tokyo, Hong Kong... possibly a couple more). You cannot route via the Middle East (well, you can, but you'll pay for two awards rather than one). So, for example, to fly Qantas between SYD and LHR, you would need to find availability on QF1 which spans the entire route as a continuous flight. If you fly QF SYD-DXB and then, say, DXB-LHR on BA, even if the two are within the correct connecting time, you will still pay for two awards (cf. on US DM this would be considered one award). EY is an AA partner, however due to the rules aforementioned, it is impossible to redeem only one award for any redemption which goes between the South West Pacific region and Europe (or another region for that matter) on EY.

Most prices in points will go up, only a few choice ones will go down. AA currently have a cap on the number of points annually that can be purchased.

Apart from that, some awards on some airlines can be booked directly using AA's website which skips booking fees and necessitating having to call up. Otherwise, if you're a US DM classic or book on some airlines that can't be booked using the website (CX comes to mind, of course), then you'll generally find AAgents are more switched on and not as geographically challenged compared to the US DM ones (which means usually better service, but that means you can't pull fast ones on them like it was on US DM).

So basically apart from one way awards, everything gets worse.

Vale Guam........have only being there 10 times :P

re: USDM & AA account balances to convert from March 28th

It's been gunna happen for over 18 months ... buy while you can has been the motto ...

Is still not that bad ... cost of a return business fare within Oz /NZ will increase from 30k to 35k ... compare that with the 32k (MEL/SYD), 72k (PER/SYD or BNE/AKL) & 96k (PER/AKL) points that Qantas frequent flyer would charge.

re: USDM & AA account balances to convert from March 28th

AA is cheaper than USDM to Asia, Middle East, Africa and South America. It's the same cost to Europe albeit routing is more restrictive.

I would, except if I had done that I would have been up to my eyeballs in debt.

Life has its ways of dealing you a hand where you simply just have to play the best you can given the current tricks, even if it means sometimes you're just out of trumps.

Pragmatically, I have 150,000 US DM miles which I am pondering whether I should burn in the next 30 days or not (what will happen to US DM bookings in the future if changes are desired?). More critically, my folks have 120,000 US DM miles apiece which they may need to get into action in the next 30 days otherwise they will lose their coveted en route stopover. Similarly with my sister and her mere 90,000 US DM miles. So I think some major planning is in order for the next month.

I cant see any reason why rewards booked under US cant be changed under AA. it is the same set of airlines so availability should be similar.

It will be interesting. I have an award to the US in early June and I'd like to change the timing of a US domestic flight - not essential but a nice to have. The change would be free under AA rules but cost $150 under DM. I'm hoping that I'll be able to do it for free BUT they might turn around and say I need to pay extra points because the AA awards costs more points.

I was reading a thread on FT and their opinion was that USDM awards would not be changeable at all but this would surprise me. I suspect they'll take the path of least resistance and try not to upset their frequent flyers where possible.

Am I the only one not to have a USDM account and not worried by the ensuing changes :o

Possibly. 
The 2 of us (really me only!;)) have a USDM account each with miles bought when the AUD was close to parity with the USD:shock:...we will have a nice stockpile of AA miles when the conversion takes place:)

I myself am not worried.

Between SWMBO and I, we are sitting on a combined AAdvantage/Dividend Mile balance of a little under 300K purchased at near parity ... we are looking forward to the merge :D.

Hope there's no massive devaluation coming- AA have been lagging well behind UA and DL in their points levels!

re: USDM & AA account balances to convert from March 28th

There is certain to be some devaluation - about a year ago AA removed gateway stopovers and explorer awards - with no notice.

See post #10 for an inkling to my plans ...
