J to Hawaii

Hi all, I just tried looking at PE or J flights from SYD to Hawaii and looks like there is only J, which is fine, however only economy shows up when trying to book through Virgin site. The box to select travel class greys out as soon as Honolulu is put in as a destination. If I look at booking through Hawaiian there is J available and also if I look at an online travel agent site like bestflights.com.au they show a Virgin codeshare with Hawaiian on VA metal with J available. Anyone know what the deal is here with J not coming up on the Virgin website?

J doesn't seem to appear, as you said, let's assume it's a quirk of the Virgin website

Just book through the Hawaiian website!

For a decent J experience you may be better off booking NZ via AKL - at least the leg from NZ to HNL should be good.

Air NZ is flying the 777-200 on AKL-HNL on some days

Some VERY cheap J fares there too

At the expense of a very long journey, 23H on the way out with a mandatory stop over in NZ - not worth it!

From Sydney not really but if you want a fully flat bed it's an option. Also leaving in the evening the night before isn't that bad, as you don't need another day off work!

The return is only 15 hours

I'll look at it from MEL, but have an Hawaiian Air trip later this year first

Thats a VA codeshare with HA metal, the new A330s.

That's where I went wrong, thank's for explaining that. I was thinking metal was when you booked a code share and if it was ticketed with that airlines code, like VA6970 then it was that airlines metal, hence my original post was wrong in regards to Virgin metal. My main concern then is who the flight is ticketed by and if a VA ticketed flight would be better than a HA ticket. Status credit wise it does not appear there is any difference but points earn wise it does and would be better for me to be ticketed by VA.

Yeah HA have pretty good point earn rates, 1.0 per mile, so about 5060 points minimum each leg from memory. 20k points return as a Silver.

I don't think you earn SCs on HA flight numbers. I am not sure about VA numbers on codeshare flights. I was looking at a similar trip to HNL for the three of us and was put off HA by the lack of earning SCs - based on the comparison of seats I would be tempted to book JQ now instead.

Don't forget the qualifying sectors though will kick in from 25 august, then it becomes a points, SC and sector consideration. But if you're flying lots on VA/dj I guess it doesn't matter as much

I had the same thought. And, indeed, the last time I was mucking around with options for flights to Hawaii, HA definitely didn't earn SCs. But at some point over the past couple of months Hawaiian has been added to the SC earn table:

That seems to have changed for the better then - I am sure originally you couldn't earn SCs - good work virgin.

In terms of family pooling then would a family of three travelling in J to HNL from SYD return net 3 x 320 SCs - being enough to requal for VA/DJ WP?
