As reported at How to buy Virgin Australia Velocity frequent flyer points - Australian Business Traveller, one can now buy additional points for securing Award seats.

Of course, addressing issues such as Long Haul Award Seat availability, segregating the pool of Upgrades from Awards and having a decently useful search that provides a calendar view or excludes Any Seat redemptions seems to be a non-consideration at the moment for Virgin.

What are everyone's thoughts?

I am pleased to hear this. However, buying points is only worth it if redeeming for business class seats.

I know it's a waste of points, but being fairly young. I'd rather fly for free twice in economy than once in business... That may change with time though.

If one only needs to top up their balance to enjoy the majority of their flights at no cost, then it's an excellent proposal.

The fact that significant structural issues still exist with the program as it stands is my concern, and this development may in fact exacerbate those issues.

This is a good step, but still of limited use considering you need 80% of the required points for a particular reward already in your account.

With time spent on this forum, almost certain to change. You just need a few more points, and we'll help with that too.

It is expensive, but if you're 500 points short of a business upgrade, $18 isn't bad value.

True, and if purchasing with an American Express Velocity Platinum card, you'll get almost 10% additional with the purchase.

Essentially Virgin are introducing further competition for their existing Award Seat allocations with this move, and current availability on the best routes is problematic as it is.

You are very correct. I cannot argue the logic! The only issue I have is that I'm not chasing logic........I'm chasing bargains!

Really? We're about to buy some points but hadn't heard this, do you know where this is listed?

Can you top up directly from the Virgin website or do you need to call them? We've been trying to find the top up area on the website but can only find the points table and not how to top up directly online.

Cheers!

Where is the part on the extra 10%? " and if purchasing with an American Express Velocity Platinum card, you'll get almost 10% additional with the purchase."

I believe it was in the context of a purchase of 500 points using the Platinum card = $18 x 2 = 36 points (almost 10% of the 500 points purchased)

Ta. Though the original poster is stretching it to say that 6 % is almost 10%.....and given that most readers of this forum would use a points earning card pf some tpe anyway the total "extra" effect of using an American Express Velocity Platinum Card would be less again, or even nil depending on what card they used.

Actually its triple points on VA purchases so it is 54 points on a 500 point purchase. ... over 10% in fact.

Thanks for the link AIRwin but i don't think you can purchase the points online using the link you provided, you have to call them. I was curious if it could be done online. Thanks anyway though!
