There's a huge amount of speculation about this, similar to the Woolworths/Masters/Lowes situation. But no real facts available at this time.

It would be just as valid to randomly speculate that Woolworths was about to announce that it will become the third major domestic airline operator in Australia.

Actually I don't think that's anywhere close to being true.

I think the last paragraph is the more important piece of news:

Woolworths' prime competitor Coles today launched a partnership with Etihad Airways, which is a major stakeholder in Qantas' challenger Virgin Australia through which members of Coles' Flybuys program can earn frequent flyer points but also status credits for fast-tracking towards Silver, Gold and Platinum membership and perks.

Still think it is more likely that Woolies will pull it in favour of more targeted promotions given Coles doesn't match it.

That said do think it will lose them some customers who only shop at Woolies for that reason

I keep getting emails from Woolies asking why they haven't seen me in so long and offering me various deals, when in reality I pop into the local one 3-4 times a week but spend < $30 so never bother to swipe my card.

should always swipe it - keeps them interested in you

No points, so what's the point?

Demonstrating your low value will prompt them to ask them to increase it. They want infrequent, large value shops so you will pick up high margin add ons.

</speculation>

Well I prefer cokes to woolies. But EDR keeps me interested.

Sources close to Woolworths suggest the arrangement with Qantas, which means shoppers can earn frequent flyer points when they shop at Woolworths, Big W or BWS is too costly to continue because the retailer has to pay for the points it passes on to customers.

and people wonder why banks are cutting the ATO free

Re: Woolworths rethinking Qantas - or a slow news day

Given the amount of promotions recently involving credit rather than points, its probably been coming for a while!

Woolies has some items I can't get in coles, and really the only reason I go to coles is that their fresh baked sourdough is a reasonable substitute for the real thing. I swipe my woolies card regardless of the value of spend.

I don't swipe my FlyBuys because apart from the misnomer, I have never seen any value in it. There is something about the coles colour scheme also that makes the store look dusty/dirty, at least through my tires old eyes.

I do ... these days there is a minimum of 0.5 cent value per $ spent - i get double that having an insurance product.

In 24 months normal spend my direct redemption value is over $500 ... that is despite Coles only getting about 30% of our shopping.

Hmm, these media articles seem a classic case of sabre rattling. Negotiations mustn't be going well, and Woolworths wants Qantas to tighten their belt. So leak something to the media about there being discontent, and wait for the negotiations to improve...
