Melbourne airport is a long way from the CBD. I live in the inner-east and travel through MEL for leisure monthly. I use various methods of transport, but mainly:

- tram to Southern Cross then Skybus to MEL (takes about an hour door to door non-peak).
- drive and park in long-term car park (takes about 40 minutes door to door - 20 minutes to drive then 20 minutes stuffing around finding a park and waiting for that stupid bus).
- taxi - at least $50 each way.

My trips are of varying length - usually around 48 hours, some as short as 8 hours, some a week or longer. I usually leave Friday night after work or Saturday morning and often back late afternoon/early evening Sunday.

Im getting pretty frustrated with all 3 of the above options.

- the tram + Skybus is painfully slow, particularly coming home on a Sunday night (it's the last thing I feel like doing) and Skybus prices are rapidly increasing
- while the drive to the LTCP is a breeze non-peak, it takes ages to find a park (although the new entrance makes it quicker) and the buses are not frequent or comfortable. Waiting 10 plus minutes in the middle of winter is miserable. Wherever you park, you're either going to have a long bus trip there or back. With the new exit there are now a whole 2 exits for, what, 10,000 cars? I also think its very expensive if you're outside the sweet spot of 12 - 23 hours or 3 - 5 days.
- taxis are too expensive - it's well over $100 for a round trip.

Any suggestions/recommendations? I realise there are other private parking options not run by Melbourne airport - can anyone suggest one that is cheaper than long term (esp for 2-3-4 days) and has easy ways to get to and from the terminal?

Someone also mentioned to be a sky-bus type thing that drops you at your door if you pre-book (Sun Bus? Star Bus?) I cant remember the name - apparently its not quick but its extremely convenient.

Thanks for your help - I'm a gun at finding cheap flights and it's a breeze once Im in the terminal with my VA SG but I feel I waste a lot of time and money getting there and back!

Do what i do, get your wife to drive you there.

Only joking. Have you looked at other parking alternatives? I use Melrose Parking, which cost the company $16 a day on account, but it is probably just over $20. It's close to the terminals, your car is parked under cover (imagine being parked outside today!) and the shuttles to and from the airport are frequent, and included in the fee. Nothing better than getting back there to see your car in the drive with the keys in it ready for a fast getaway.

There are a few outside the airport that offer a good shuttle service.. I'll post once i find the details of the last one i used. They were pretty good.

I've used the StarBus before, not too bad, but was left waiting and wondering for a while at my hotel one time. They did get me in time though.

Have you considered hiring a car in the city and dropping it at the airport? I'm not sure if that works as well down there, but know my dad has been known to do that on the Gold Coast, dropping to Brisbane before, for quite a low rate. Certainly convenient, more so if you could do it in both directions.

I use Melbourne Airport Car-Jetport Parking Tullamarine. Have done so for 10 plus years
Good shuttle service, undercover parking & usually they wash my car (no extra $).
Need to book on line at peak times. If my return date changes I just phone or email them.

Did some research on this topic a year or so ago was: Taxi for me airport-home is $50-$55 each way.
Some are indoor under cover, but many are outdoors or have both indoor & outdoor
Some are self park and others are valet park
Some charge by the calender day and others per 24 hrs. So in at 13:00 04-01-2013 and out at 12:55 05-01-2013 is 1 day for some, but 2 days for others

I wont pay for Long term parking at the airport.. Far too extensive for the service they provide. i use off site parking save a heap.

Is 23k's a long way from the CBD in reality? Isn't KUL some 2.5 times that?

I guess the answer comes down to exactly how much you do want to spend and what you factor as being important.

Very easy answer if you don't mind a very cheap 1hr or so journey.

1) Walk / bus /driven by family to the local train station.
2) Catch the next train to the city, exit at flinders street.
3) Catch the craigiburn line train to Broady.
4) Exit train @ Broadmeadows station, at wait at the MELBOURNE AIRPORT 901 bus stop.
5) Get on the 901 bus heading to the airport (Not to frankston), exit at Melbourne airport.
6) Get off bus and walk 5-10 min to the checkin section.

Total cost: 2 hr zone 1 / 2 micky mouse (myki!) fare.

Cant explain it any more simple, but if you msg me, i can give you websites for the bus and train timetables.

Wednesday I left home 12:02pm with an eight minute walk to Carrum Station.

From there I caught a 12:11pm train stopping all stations to Flinders St, arriving platform 9 - 2 minutes early at 1:02pm.

Walked to platform 5 and caught 1:09pm Craigieburn train, arriving Broadmeadows on time at 1:44pm.

I walked out of the station and onto the 1:47pm 901 bus to the airport.

Off bus 2pm, in DJ lounge 2:05pm.

Cost - nufin extra as I was using a 365day MyKi pass (otherwise a Zone1&2 2 hour ticket).

On weekends I get off the train at Essendon and catch the ½ past (daylight hours) 478/479 bus to the Airport. They also depart from the Airport stop to Essendon (Moonee Ponds) on the daylight hours.

I do still go through ~2½ 10 trip Skybus tickets each year when times don't work with early morning or late flights.

Taxi from/to home is $135+ using freeways/toll roads.

On the extremely rare occasions when I need to travel in the early hours of a morning, it's Skybus to/from Airport then taxi ramainder - I save an instant $30 there.
Did I post that I hate taking taxi's?

I have used starbus door to door, was very good value. Very similar to the shuttles in the states which are great, like a shared taxi.

Brisbane makes sense to do that. Maybe melb not that practicable

Actually, MEL can work quite well - I have done it dozens of times.

I have access to a good corporate rate (~$49 for FCAR) so pick up the car from the city after work the evening before and drive it home. Then it's generally an OMG O'clock start in the morning, with a refuel on the Ring Road (avoiding the tollways since they now have their own unavoidable fees - bring back the Tulla Pass!). Drop off at the airport and off we go ...

Yes that's a good deal.

My memory is now jogged.... I missed a flight (1 of 4-out of many. Shhhh) and picked up a car to return home then back the next day. Less than half the taxi/limo price and more convenient.

Good topic

I use Andrews Parking. Joined membership for corporate rate. pretty cheap have choice of undercover or not can pay for clean, etc. They are very friendly, good service and can book online. members always have a space.

Must agree. I am 2.5 hours away from Tulla based in regional Victoria. Have used Andrews Parking on quite a few occasions, both long and short stays, the shuttle is quick and customer service is excellent. Easy online booking system. They are quick to pick you up on return and my car is always ready to go when I get back. Very reasonable rates and they do a good job with the cleaning too.
