Hi All

My sister has found herself in a bit of a conundrum - wondering if there's any way you could suggest other than just cop the fare.

She needs a one way, west coast US to PER in late Jan, 2016 at minimum cost. Currently, approx $700-800 US - which is about the same as a return fare ex-AU in some current sales.

Unfortunately no economy redemptions available on AA, QF Y redemptions surcharges are too high.

Checking Skyscanner etc daily but very little one way hope seems to be arising.

What have I missed?

I would have said JQ for the OW HNL-PER but late Jan its mostly pricing in the US$700 range.
Can't see any cheaper going via CGK or KUL either with LAX to those places in the US$600-700 range

I'd say that is all you are getting. LM if they had a promo might work out marginally cheaper, but it would be marginal and poor timings and involve screenshots.

I'd say that is a very good fare. Only a few years ago it would have been 3 times that and one way is rarely a cheaper option. There are lots of cheap US AUS fares at the moment, so snap it up.

LAX-HKG looks fine
Then it seems HKG-PER would be via sunny Bali and jumping on JQ :o

Yikes.

One could always book LAX-HKG as an award, then fly HKG-SIN-PER on Scoot or HKG-KUL-PER on Air Asia (or similar).

$700 to $800 US isn't that bad. That's about 8 cents per mile.

You could look at LCC to Hawaii then Jetstar to Aus, but you might only save $50 or so.

How cheap where you expecting it to be?

What points currencies do you have available? AA? Or only QF?

She only has qf, and limited at that.

Less than the cost of a return fare :)

If she can wait until 5 Feb and would prefer to burn points rather than cash at ~1.7c/point, she can fly LAX-SYD-PER on AA/QF for 55K QF points + $48.59. That's the first date in 2017 that has AA SAAver availability in Y that can be booked through QF.

Otherwise, the cash one way fare seems the best option. The AU-US fare war has skewed the market a bit, but US$720 for LAX-PER isn't really too bad.

Late January is when many are returning from summer holidays.Would there be any sale fares?
No wonder all awards have gone.

Can she get to Vancouver cheaply? (bus?) Fares from there around 01 Feb are quite cheap into KUL. Then AirAsia or Scoot into PER.

Happy wandering

Will check out YVR. Thanks.

Unfortunately it's not an ideal time of year to be returning one way to Australia - but thanks everyone for your ideas.

I don't think it is viable unless you have stacks of MR/Diners/SPG points but you could do a one-way award with Alaska on Qantas for 42.5K Y/47.5K PE/55K J or 40K/47.5K/60K on CX with relatively low taxes
If you found one of the legs in a higher class, you might fancy it

One ways are usually expensive but I found getting a bit creative can turn up some unexpected cheap fares.
Last March, my daughter joined me on a trip to India on her way to London for a 2 year stint. I spoiled her with J on SQ one way SYD to VTZ on points. From India, she needed to get to Europe on a paid Y ticket one way. After some searching I found Air India on a brand new 787 in Y from Delhi to Paris direct for A$465. Unbelievably cheap I thought. Obviously it was a bit of a come down for her from SQ's J class but she said the flight was good although the food was pretty bad.
