Looking for tips in how to get best possible price on Flights. My wife and I would like to do a return trip to Buenos Airies in Dec / Jan and I got a rude shock when I looked at the cost if the flights at that time.
Best I can find is about 4k rtn pp in economy which is out of our price range.
Anyone got any tips on how to secure a more reasonable price?

You could use points, wait for sales, take a really long route with multiple stops, or travel in a cargo plane.

Cargo plane. ??? Is this even possible ???
Or are you taking the piss?

If so how where who?

This is something I would seriously consider if the price was right. In fact I would also consider freighting across one of my motorcycles to tour around on if the price was affordable to me.
If your not taking the piss could you please give more details.

Welcome to AFF, on a more serious note I suggest you look at buying points, via US Air Dividend Miles or Avianca Life Miles, both have promos at times that give points for free when buying or sharing.

Traveling to South America is always expensive, coupled with over holiday / peak travel times, you are unlikely to find anything that's much better than 2K pp vv.

The obvious one is look at what day you are planning on flying out on, sometimes an extra day / one less day can cut the price in half (or double the price), the other one is look at points you have / can get, whilst Y does typically represent bad value for points redemption, I myself have used a Y classic award to do a trip which I would not have otherwise been able to afford.

Look at non AU sites to see if you can get a better deal.

Look at your routing and if there are any south american flights you'd like to do at the same time / see if flying via North America is an option. Since here to the US return is only around $1K pp vv, that would still give you up to $1K pp vv to get from North America down to South America (a friend of mine did a similar thing a few years back). Compare all airlines and all options, since it might be that VA SYD-LAX but LA from LAX to EZE gives the best value, despite not being aligned.

Also whilst it might not represent a saving on the AU-South America fare itself, something like a circle pacific might be able to let you throw in additional destinations which you where planning on traveling to anyway for roughly the same cost. If you where planning on flying in South America it could represent a saving there.

Just some food for thought...

You can try Emirates for about $3300 (20/12 - 7/1) but at least 5 hours longer.
Have you tried a cheap Air Asia or Scoot flight to KUL / SIN and then book from there?
(be aware flights not connecting, having to check out/in your luggage again and that the airlines would not 'secure' your onward booking if your first flight is delayed or cancelled, etc)

Buy fares originating in developing countries. Get cashback and if you find a lower price, apply for the BRG!

Sample dates of Dec 15 to Jan 15

British Airways Sydney to Singapore return $1,234

At that time of the year flights are not cheap.

This time last year a colleague from work wanted to go to South Africa for Christmas and New Year and had a quote of ~$11500 for 4 of them. I was going on leave in a couple of hours and managed to get the cost down to ~$9000 including a couple of nights accommodation in KUL either side.

Break up the trip. Look on Skyscanner. Sometimes you will be surprised what you will find.

Oh, and forget about maximising points earn if your motivation is saving money.
