NAB Ends Pro-Rata Credit Card Annual Fee Refunds

National Australia Bank (NAB) has quietly changed its policy of giving a pro-rata refund of the annual fee to customers who cancel their credit card within the first year.

Until last month, NAB customers who cancelled their credit card after paying the annual fee could receive a pro-rata refund of the fee paid. This would be calculated based on the number of months still outstanding until the next annual fee was due.

Australian Frequent Flyer understands that NAB may still offer a pro-rata annual fee refund to customers who cancel their credit card after keeping it open for more than a year. The NAB StraightUp credit card is also excluded from this change.

This policy was not widely advertised. But it was a nice benefit for NAB customers when cancelling credit cards just a few months after opening them. While they wouldn’t get the full annual fee back, these customers would receive a fee credit for the unused months. This refund could be sent to either another NAB account or an external bank account.

Why would NAB make this change?

It’s not difficult to see why NAB may have stopped giving pro-rata annual fee refunds to customers who’ve held a credit card for less than a year. Some people may simply decide that they no longer want the card, or that it’s not for them. But others would be credit card churners who’ve earned a large amount of frequent flyer points – which the bank has to pay for.

Many of NAB’s credit cards currently come with a reduced annual fee in the first year. Even so, if NAB has awarded a customer a large amount of bonus points, it could be quite unprofitable for them to also refund a large portion of that annual fee.

In order to encourage new customers to keep their credit cards open for more than 12 months, most the current sign-up bonus point offers on NAB’s Premium and Signature cards also offer extra bonus points to customers who renew their card for a second year.

What about other banks?

Most other Australian banks do not offer pro-rata refunds of credit card annual fees to customers who close their accounts mid-way through the year.

I’ve had the same approach when I closed my nab signature card earlier this year. Haven’t seen another credit card provider take this approach either!

Good to hear this is consistent, it certainly makes the NAB cards more appealing. If you're quick to hit the bonus, get the points and close the card, you could potentially get whatever the current Signature signup bonus is for $50-100...

Same for me as well, good on NAB. Think this is a result of the Royal Commission though (or rather NAB's interpretation of the findings).

Wow, that is useful information. I'm due to get 30,000 reward points soon after renewing for the second year. I'll be happy to cancel soon after and get most of the $295 back.

Interestingly, seems NAB is also no longer interested in motivating a card holder to keep the card rather than cancel. Been a long time NAB customer with several accounts but nothing offered when I wanted to cancel 2 credit cards recently. Refunded the annual fee on cancellation but clearly won’t waive these fees moving forward.

Same here, I got a $245 refund after cancelling within 2 months. Good thing how NAB pays out the bonus points once minimum spend has been met.

You will I just did this recently (as posted on the other thread).

I got the NAB Signature Black in April 2021, as there was no annual fee in first year it was an easy 100k points.

I meant to cancel in March 2021, but there was a lot going on and I forgot so it auto-renewed in April and I only noticed when the 25k bonus points hit QFF on 1st May. At that point I stopped using the card and once the points for May spend had posted on 1st June, I cancelled the card.

Much to my surprise NAB refunded $362 of the $395 annual fee, meaning those 25k bonus points cost $33, not a bad earn rate.

I recently saw an ad near my local grocery store for NAB cc which specified acct must remain open for 12 months. Can't recall if other ads also stated this - never paid attention. Wonder if this means the days of prorated refund are ending.

Those that have got the refund - did you call to cancel the account or do it online?
