Westpac and St George Bank will cap the number of Qantas Frequent Flyer points that can be earned annually on its credit cards from 1 January 2022.
The change will limit the total number of Qantas points that can be earned each calendar year on the St George Amplify Qantas Platinum and Amplify Qantas Signature cards. This also affects the equivalent Amplify Qantas credit cards offered by Bank of Melbourne and Bank SA, which like St George Bank are owned by Westpac.
The change also affects the Westpac Altitude Platinum and Altitude Black cards that earn Qantas points. But if you opt to earn Westpac Altitude points or Velocity points instead, earning remains uncapped.
From next year, the Amplify Qantas Platinum and Westpac Altitude Platinum credit cards will award 0.5 Qantas points only for the first $100,000 spent on the card per year. No points will be awarded on spend exceeding this amount. This means you would only be able to earn a maximum of 50,000 Qantas points per year with these cards.
From the same date, the $279/year Amplify Qantas Signature credit card and $300/year Westpac Altitude Black cards will award 0.75 Qantas points on only the first $250,000 spent on the card each calendar year. That’s a maximum of 187,500 Qantas points that you could earn each year with these cards, excluding bonuses.
Bonus points, such as the 10% Birthday Bonus Points that come with the St George Amplify Qantas Signature card, are not counted towards the new annual points limit.
The new Qantas points caps only apply from 1 January 2022, so you can still earn unlimited Qantas Frequent Flyer points on Westpac and St George credit cards until the end of this year.
The range of St George credit cards that earn Amplify Rewards points, rather than Qantas points, do not appear to be affected by this change. These cards can still earn an uncapped number of Amplify Rewards points each year. So if you have St George credit card that earns Qantas points and have a high credit card spend, it would now be worth seriously considering switching to a card earning Amplify points (or to another bank).
The St George Amplify Rewards Signature credit card earns the equivalent of 0.75 Virgin Australia Velocity points, Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer miles or Malaysia Airlines Enrich points per dollar spent.
