On 2 April 2025, Velocity Frequent Flyer reduced the amount of points you’ll earn for Virgin Australia flights. Instead of five Velocity base points per dollar spent, most people will now earn four.

But you can still earn Velocity points at the higher rate of 5 per $1 – that’s 25% more points – if you’ve held a Velocity co-brand credit card in the past year!

Here’s how it works…

Earn bonus Velocity points when flying Virgin Australia

You’ll earn an additional base point per dollar if you’ve earned at least one point from spending on an eligible Velocity credit card within a year prior to taking your Virgin Australia flight.

Eleven credit cards are eligible for this offer, and you don’t even need to have booked the flight using your Velocity Frequent Flyer credit card. You just need to have earned at least one Velocity point through an eligible card sometime in the 12 months before you fly.

You’ll earn the additional base point per dollar when crediting Virgin Australia marketed and operated flights to Velocity Frequent Flyer. The bonus points don’t apply to flights operated by partner airlines.

See the Velocity Frequent Flyer website for the full T&Cs.

How this works with Velocity status tier bonus points

Velocity Silver, Gold and Platinum members can earn 50%, 75% and 100% bonus points on Virgin Australia flights, respectively.

These bonus points are earned on the base points amount. If you’ve earned Velocity points with an eligible credit card in the past 12 months, your base rate will be five points per dollar.

For example, a Velocity Platinum member who has earned points with an eligible Velocity credit card during the past year would earn 10 points per $1 spent on Virgin Australia flights. That’s 5 base points and 5 tier bonus points for every dollar paid.

Without a credit card, Velocity Platinum members would earn eight points per dollar.

Earn more Velocity points with credit cards in addition to any status tier bonuses
Velocity status tier bonuses are also earned on the additional base point.

Referring to original article (reference 9 points per dollar with credit card) my reading is that Platinum members with Velocity earning credit card earn 4 base points + 1 additional base point for credit card and 100% bonus on the total of 5 BASE points = 10 points per dollar spent
