Virgin Australia’s frequent flyer program has launched a new partnership with rideshare app DiDi.

From today, Velocity Frequent Flyer members can earn points on every DiDi ride in Australia. For a limited time, you can also get a bonus 1,000 Velocity Points just for linking your DiDi and Velocity accounts.

It comes two weeks after Velocity’s former rideshare partner Ola abruptly shut down its Australian operations. Velocity and Ola ended their partnership in May 2023.

How to earn Velocity Points with DiDi

By downloading the DiDi app and linking your Velocity account, you’ll earn 1 Velocity point per $1 spent on the base fare for any DiDi ride within Australia. The base fare excludes GST and any other tolls or third-party fees like airport surcharges. (See the Velocity website for full T&Cs.)

You can also earn 1,000 bonus Velocity Points by linking your account in the DiDi app by 30 June 2024. (This offer was previously due to end on 15 May 2024, but Velocity extended it.) To do this, download the DiDi app and create an account (if you haven’t already). Then, in the app menu, select “Velocity Points” and add your Velocity account details.

The DiDi website has detailed instructions.

You can also link your Virgin Australia Business Flyer account with DiDi to earn Velocity Points via Virgin Australia’s loyalty program for small-to-medium businesses.

Earning Qantas Points with Uber

As an alternative, you can continue to earn Qantas Points on eligible Uber rides. However, Qantas Points are only earned when riding with Uber to or from selected Australian airports. You won’t earn any Qantas Points on any other Uber rides.

Uber also recently lowered its earn rate on Qantas airport rides to 1 point per $2 spent, unless you use Uber Reserve which continues to earn 1 point per $1.

Qantas Frequent Flyer also has an ongoing offer of 1,000 bonus points when you link your Qantas and Uber accounts for the first time.

Not mentioned here, but Ola terminated service in Australia fully last week.

For those who don't have an AFR sub, here's the public Velocity ad for the Didi launch:

Also on their partner page:

1 point/ dollar for every ride (not just to/from airport)

And also 1000 Velocity points just for adding your VFF number in the Didi app.

Seems like a useful new partnership.

I just downloaded the DiDi app and created an account, but I can't see an option yet to add my Velocity details. Maybe the app still needs updating?

Strange... I don't see that option at all. 🤷‍♂️

Perfect! I’ll take my 1000 points 🙂

Didi is good, they are often slightly cheaper than uber. The only issue is that Didi can take 2 or 3 times longer than an uber to arrive in some areas.

Tried it from MEL on Friday night.
No dice. No one wanted my trip to CBD, I had at least 5 cancels and 3 doing the dodgy accept but not moving. Shame.

There should be penalties for drivers doing that nonsense! Luckily that kind of thing has only happened to me twice.

Awesome free points.

Edit: I think there's an extra 1000 points for your velocity business account if you link that too.

This can happen from time to time especially if uber is surging. When that happens I sort of give up and go back to uber.

But on the flip side, there are so many vouchers with DiDi that I've had a $12 trip from Sydney CBD to the airport.

Are you in Australia at the moment? It might not be available to set it up unless you are.

I've always had way more problems with rideshare services in Melbourne than in any other city. I dunno what it is there but they all the drivers just seem very unreliable.
