A Christmas Surprise (Air China Business Class) |
Trip
report by Mattg | Last year, as some of you may know, I was living in Austria. But my family are in Australia and New Zealand, so for Christmas in 2019 I decided to return home. I found a great deal on Air China Business Class flights from Germany to Australia & New Zealand which happened to include dates in the weeks before and after Christmas! read

Q:
Where did you go on your last trip? |
A:
My last trip was to Turkey and Mainz in Germany. There were a few things on my to-do list: Fly First Class in a 747, try Thai Airways' legendary First Class service, experience Turkish Airlines (who don’t fly to Australia) & visit their brand new lounge in Istanbul (which is simply amazing), and fly in the longest commercial aircraft in the world, a 747-8. In order to do all of this I flew Thai 747 F [First] from Sydney to Bangkok where I connected after a lengthy transit with Thai A380 F to Paris. From Paris to Istanbul was with Turkish J [Business]. After a couple of weeks in Turkey I again flew TK J to Frankfurt but on a recommendation from boomy stayed in Mainz. My plan was to wait here for up to a week hoping to snag a LifeMiles redemption in F on the Lufthansa 747-8 to Tokyo. Unfortunately time was running out and said redemption wasn’t showing up, so I grabbed an Emirates F reward back to Australia instead. |
Q:
Where will you go when the current travel bans are lifted? |
A:
Locally, +1 and I have a trip booked to the NSW South Coast. We want to take our granddaughters whale watching. Like us, they have never seen a whale. November sees us booked on a cruise to New Zealand. Once the skies are open again we will probably go back to Europe with Amsterdam on the list as we want to travel on the Thalys. |
Q:
Favourite airline? |
A:
That's
a hard one. If Turkish Airlines flew to Australia they would win hands down. Emirates wins for me but that could change once I try a few others. In J on the A380 I like the hard product and in F I really do like a shower to freshen up prior to breakfast and landing. |
Q:
What's one piece of advice you would give to a new AFF member? |
A:
Ask as many questions as you need to. Don't think it's a dumb question, we all had to begin somewhere. AFF and its members are a great resource for many things, not just travel. Don't be lazy though, do some research too. |
Q:
Favourite thread on AFF? |
A: Not a thread actually, a forum - Trip
Reports and Trip Photos. I really enjoy reading about other peoples' trips. It provides me with ideas of where to go or simply dream about where I would like to go. Trip reports are also such a fabulous resource on everything from how to get from A to B, where to stay, what to avoid, where to eat. A well written trip report contains a mountain of information and may even contain some amusing anecdotes. |
