One member has discovered the hard way that it pays to be overly cautious when dealing with hire car companies. This member rented a car from Hertz Sydney airport which upon pick-up was dented and scratched. The damage was pointed out to the customer service representative and our member was told not to worry. Upon return of the vehicle, our member has been faced with a charge of $646 for existing damage.
One member is stringent in their strategy when dealing with hire car companies. Their modus operandi is to take photos on pick-up, photos on drop off and use a debit card with $200 on it to avoid unsubstantiated charges. The key is to take photos even if undamaged, so you can successfully prove that all damage came after your return of the vehicle.
Insisting upon full documentation of all scratches, dents and alleged “Wear and tear” before even getting in the car is must-have insurance. The hire agreement should have ample room for documenting all existing damage. Our members recommend that you choose an alternative car hire company if they are not prepared to comply with your requests for full documentation.
