After (literally) months of speculation, Qantas has launched a brand new Double Status Credits or Double Points offer today!
Qantas Frequent Flyer members can register for their choice of either double status credits (which count towards Qantas Silver, Gold, Platinum and Platinum One qualification) or double Qantas points on the Qantas website.
Note that you’ll need to register in advance to take advantage of either offer. You should receive a confirmation email after registering for either offer.
After registering between today and 28 March 2023, you’ll earn double Qantas points or status credits on an unlimited number of eligible Qantas flights booked during the promotional period (i.e. between 23-28 March 2023).
Qantas marketed and operated flights taken between 29 March 2023 and 28 February 2024 will be eligible to earn extra points or status credits as part of this offer. (QantasLink flights are also eligible, including QantasLink flights operated by Alliance Airlines with a “QF19xx” flight number.)
Codeshare flights operated or marketed by airlines other than Qantas are not eligible to earn bonus status credits or points with this offer. According to the terms and conditions, any bonus status credits earned from this offer also don’t count towards any Qantas Status Accelerator challenge, Loyalty Bonuses or the Platinum & Platinum One Bonus Rewards.
If you’re a Qantas Points Club member, you can also earn double status credits on Qantas Classic Flight Rewards booked during the promotion period.
Should I choose double points or status credits?
The answer to this will depend on your personal circumstances.
If you’re aiming to reach a higher Qantas Frequent Flyer tier, such as Silver, Gold, Platinum or Platinum One status – or you’re a current frequent flyer and need extra status credits to renew – it would definitely make sense to choose the double status credits. That’s because there are very limited opportunities to earn Qantas status credits from activities other than flying.
Keep in mind that Qantas is automatically extending the status of existing frequent flyers with membership years ending up until 30 June 2023. However, if you wish to renew your status beyond this period or upgrade to a higher tier, you’ll need to earn enough status credits (and fly at least 4 eligible Qantas or Jetstar flights) during your membership year.
If you don’t think you’ll fly enough to make it worthwhile chasing Qantas status, then you may prefer to choose double points. However, the double points offer is less lucrative overall because there are so many other easy ways to earn Qantas points – such as from credit card sign-up offers, or by buying wine.
Qantas status runs
If you want to take advantage of this promotion to book a status run, what routes offer the best value?
As is often the case during these types of promotions, Qantas doesn’t have many great sale fares available right now. But here are some examples of routes to watch:
Origin | Via | Destination | Cabin/Direction | Direction | Fare | Status credits earned (with DSC) | $/SC |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Gold Coast | Melbourne | Auckland | Business | Return | $1,674 | 560 | $2.99 |
Brisbane | Rockhampton | Mackay | Economy | One-way | $159 | 40 | $3.98 |
Brisbane | – | Christchurch | Business | Return | $1,304 | 320 | $4.08 |
Blackall | – | Longreach | Economy (Flex) | One-way | $166 | 40 | $4.15 |
Brisbane | Melbourne | Denpasar | Business | Return | $3,076 | 740 | $4.16 |
Brisbane | – | Christchurch | Business | Return | $689 | 160 | $4.31 |
Melbourne | – | Christchurch | Business | Return | $1,425 | 320 | $4.45 |
Barcaldine | – | Longreach | Economy (Flex) | One-way | $182 | 40 | $4.55 |
Gold Coast | – | Melbourne | Economy | One-way | $139 | 30 | $4.63 |
Gold Coast | Melbourne | Cairns | Business | One-way | $946 | 200 | $4.73 |
Brisbane | – | Cairns | Business | One-way | $586 | 120 | $4.88 |
Brisbane | – | Cairns | Economy | One-way | $155 | 30 | $5.17 |
Melbourne | Brisbane | Cairns | Economy | One-way | $328 | 60 | $5.47 |
Adelaide | – | Gold Coast | Business | One-way | $669 | 120 | $5.58 |
Sydney | – | Ballina | Economy | One-way | $119 | 20 | $5.95 |
One of the best value status runs we found is from Gold Coast to Auckland, via Melbourne, return, in Business Class. This booking would cost $1,674 round-trip and normally earns 280 status credits – which becomes 560 status credits after double status credits. With this status run, you’d be paying just under $3 per status credit.
In the past, many other indirect Business Class itineraries from Australia to New Zealand, New Caledonia or Indonesia have also been among the best value status runs. But Qantas appears to have increased the price of most of these itineraries.
Of course, our list above is not exhaustive.
The AFF community has been busy sharing their own status run ideas and tips on our Qantas status run discussion thread!
Our guide to the best Qantas status runs also contains some ideas. However, note that flights marketed and/or operated by Qantas’ partner airlines such as American Airlines, Cathay Pacific or Jetstar are not eligible to earn double status credits!
